Automated Bus Pilot Project Launched in Munich: A Glimpse into the Future of Public Transport
Munich, Bavaria, Germany – An automated line bus is set to begin navigating the streets of the Bavarian capital in a groundbreaking pilot project. The vehicle is currently undergoing final adjustments on a test track. Following this, it will operate in regular road traffic, initially without passengers, and then with passengers from autumn, as outlined by the manufacturer MAN Truck & Bus.
“The vehicle will independently steer, accelerate, brake, and indicate,” explained MAN expert Michael Roth. “A safety driver will be on board to monitor the systems.”
Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) highlighted that such projects, featuring fully electric, automated city buses, are pioneering for public transport in Germany. “This is pioneering work that will radiate far beyond the region and the city of Munich.”
Specific Maneuvers Under Test Before Passenger Service
Currently, specific driving maneuvers, such as approaching bus stops, are being tested. The electric bus is equipped with an array of sensors, radars, cameras, and navigation systems. Subsequently, it will proceed to the final test phase in real road traffic. The Munich Transport Company (MVG) will then commence pilot operations in the autumn. Initially, there will be a closed user group whose feedback will be incorporated into the development process. Details on when and under what conditions public rides will be possible will be announced in due course.
MAN aims to enhance the efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability of future public transport with the deployment of automated buses.
