Berlin, April 24 – Numerous individuals participated in a Fridays for Future day of action in Berlin yesterday, protesting against the federal government’s climate and energy policies. Police reported approximately 350 participants, while Fridays for Future claimed 1,000 people attended the demonstration.
Demonstrators Criticize Government’s Climate Stance
Protesters displayed homemade signs with messages such as “Stop the climate crisis – otherwise our meadow will dry up.” Other banners criticized Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche (CDU), whom the movement accuses of colluding with the gas industry.
The demonstration commenced in front of the CDU party headquarters, the Konrad-Adenauer-Haus near Tiergarten, and then moved to the federal headquarters of the SPD, the Willy-Brandt-Haus in Kreuzberg. Large banners were unfurled in front of both party headquarters, criticizing the coalition’s energy policy and demanding a rapid departure from climate-damaging fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas. Renowned activist Luisa Neubauer spoke at the event.
Police Presence and Nationwide Protests
According to their own statements, the Berlin police accompanied the demonstration with around 150 officers.
The protest in the capital was part of a nationwide day of action by Fridays for Future. According to the movement, actions took place in 65 locations across Germany, for example, in front of town halls and the party offices of the ruling parties, the CDU and SPD. Fridays for Future reported that tens of thousands of people participated nationwide.
The activists called for more ambitious climate protection measures and a faster energy transition. They highlighted the urgency of the climate crisis and the need for immediate action from political leaders.
Demands for a Fossil-Free Future
The core demand of the protesters was a complete and rapid phase-out of fossil fuels. They argued that the current policies are insufficient to meet climate targets and protect future generations from the severe consequences of climate change. The activists specifically targeted the alleged ties between political figures and the fossil fuel industry, calling for greater transparency and accountability.
The demonstration in Berlin, like many others across Germany, aimed to put pressure on the government to adopt more stringent climate policies. The movement emphasized that relying on gas as a transitional fuel is not a sustainable solution and that investments should instead be directed towards renewable energy sources.
