Hamburg, April 26 – Approximately 80 individuals convened on Sunday afternoon in Hamburg-Billbrook for a vigil. They paid tribute to a cyclist who tragically lost his life last week at the intersection of Liebigstraße and Moorfleeter Straße. The incident involved the 52-year-old cyclist being struck by a truck, resulting in fatal injuries at the scene.
“Ghostbike” Erected in Memory of the Deceased
The organizers, the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) Hamburg, installed a “Ghostbike” – a white bicycle serving as a memorial to the deceased cyclist. In a poignant act of remembrance, participants of the vigil lay down with their bicycles on the street and observed several minutes of silence. Two trucks were also parked at the accident site, displaying a banner with the inscription “Only Together.”
ADFC Calls for Safer Cycling Infrastructure and Speed Limits
The ADFC is leveraging this tragic event to reiterate its demands for improved road safety for cyclists. The organization advocates for secure cycling and pedestrian paths, stricter speed limits, and a mandatory requirement for turning assistants on trucks. Hamburg’s Mayor Peter Tschentscher and Interior Senator Andy Grote (both SPD) were invited to the vigil but did not attend.
