Temporary Play Streets in Berlin 2026: Locations, Dates, and How to Participate

In 2026, many streets across Berlin will once again be transformed into temporary play streets. These initiatives aim to provide safe spaces for children to play and create meeting points for neighborhoods, especially in densely populated areas with limited playgrounds and green spaces. The Senate for Mobility, Transport, Environmental Protection, and Climate emphasizes their importance as places of encounter and community building.

Action Days for Play Streets: World Children’s Day and International Car-Free Day

Special play street action days will be held to coincide with World Children’s Day (September 20) and International Car-Free Day (September 22). With the support of the Senate, neighborhood initiatives can set up temporary play and neighborhood streets in their local areas on these days, from 3 PM to 7 PM.

How to Apply for Temporary Play Streets

Neighborhood initiatives interested in organizing a temporary play street can apply until April 30, 2026. Applications should be sent via email to the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Street and Green Spaces Office at [email protected]. Applicants will then receive a cooperation agreement, which requires five individuals to commit to fulfilling all tasks outlined in a training film. The signed agreement must be returned by May 28, as stated by the “Bundnis Temporäre Spielstraßen” (Alliance for Temporary Play Streets).

It is important to note that these action days are not intended to be street festivals. Stalls, stages, and loud music are explicitly not allowed. A maximum of 50 sections across Berlin can be converted into play streets on these action days, with selection based on the order of applications received.
