Berlin, April 27 – A dramatic pursuit unfolded in Berlin-Britz on Monday night when plainclothes police officers caught a group of suspected thieves in the act at a construction site. The suspects, who were loading building materials into a car, fled the scene, prompting a dangerous chase that led to an officer narrowly escaping injury and one of the suspects being hospitalized.
Police Confront Suspects at Construction Site
According to police reports, officers observed the men actively stealing building materials from a construction site. Upon realizing they had been spotted, the suspects immediately attempted to flee. During their escape, one police officer was forced to jump out of the path of their vehicle to avoid being struck, highlighting the dangerous nature of the encounter.
Chaotic Escape and Apprehension
The suspects’ flight was marked by further chaos. They reportedly discharged the contents of a fire extinguisher, creating a smokescreen, and also collided with several parked vehicles during their reckless escape. The chase came to an abrupt end when the 22-year-old driver of the getaway car leaped from the moving vehicle, which then crashed into a garden fence a short distance away. The driver was subsequently apprehended, though the other individuals involved managed to escape.
Suspect Injured, Investigation Underway
The arrested 22-year-old resisted arrest and was later transported to a hospital for a head injury he sustained prior to his apprehension. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, with charges including suspicion of aggravated gang theft. The police are actively working to identify and locate the remaining suspects involved in the theft and subsequent flight.
