Major Rail Disruptions Between Hamburg and Hanover: Essential Information for Travelers

Starting May 1st, 2026, passengers traveling on the Metronom line between Hamburg and Hanover will experience significant disruptions due to extensive construction work. The railway company has announced two distinct periods of service changes, urging passengers to check their travel plans carefully.

Phase 1: May 1st to July 10th – RE2 and RE3 Cancellations Uelzen-Hanover

From May 1st to July 10th, all RE2 and RE3 Metronom trains between Uelzen and Hanover will be completely canceled. This affects the following stations:

  • Hanover
  • Langenhagen Mitte
  • Isernhagen
  • Großburgwedel
  • Celle
  • Eschede
  • Unterlüß
  • Suderburg
  • Uelzen

Limited Services Uelzen-Hamburg (May 1st to June 13th):

During this period, some services will still operate between Uelzen and Hamburg. Passengers should note the following:

  • From Uelzen towards Hamburg: Daily departures at 05:38, 06:41, and 08:33.
  • From Hamburg Hbf towards Uelzen: Daily departures at 14:26, 18:28, and 20:28.
  • Additional weekday service: One train from Uelzen to Hamburg at 03:52 (Monday-Friday).
  • Weekend services: One train from Hamburg to Uelzen at 02:34 (Saturday and Sunday).

Trains on the Uelzen-Hamburg route will stop at the following stations in both directions:

  • Uelzen
  • Bad Bevensen
  • Bienenbüttel
  • Lüneburg
  • Winsen (Luhe)
  • Hamburg-Harburg
  • Hamburg Hauptbahnhof

Note for RE2 passengers towards Göttingen: Services on the Hanover-Göttingen route will run as scheduled.

Phase 2: June 14th to July 10th – Extensive Cancellations Hanover-Lüneburg

From June 14th to July 10th, no Metronom trains will operate between Hanover, Uelzen, and Lüneburg. This means that lines RE2, RE3, and RB31 will be canceled. The following stations will be affected:

  • Hanover
  • Langenhagen Mitte
  • Isernhagen
  • Großburgwedel
  • Celle
  • Eschede
  • Unterlüß
  • Suderburg
  • Uelzen
  • Bad Bevensen

Alternative Travel Options: Bus Replacement Services

Metronom will provide replacement bus services between Lüneburg, Uelzen, and Langenhagen Mitte. Passengers wishing to continue their journey from Langenhagen Mitte to Hanover can switch to local public transport services from there.

Important Considerations for Bus Replacements:

  • Bicycles are not permitted on the replacement buses.
  • The service offerings vary significantly depending on the period. While some connections between Uelzen and Hamburg remain until mid-June, train services on this route will be completely suspended from June 14th onwards.

Bremen-Hamburg Line Unaffected (Mostly)

Services on the Metronom line RE4/RB41 between Bremen and Hamburg will largely remain unchanged. However, from May 11th to May 22nd, additional services will be offered between Hamburg-Harburg and Hamburg due to construction work on the Hamburg S-Bahn.
