Hamburg, May 5 – The A7 Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg is facing another significant closure this May. As announced by Autobahn GmbH Nord, the tunnel will be closed for 37 hours in the direction of Hanover, starting on Saturday, May 9, at 6 AM, and lasting until Sunday, May 10, at 7 PM. This closure coincides with the Hamburg Port Anniversary, necessitating extensive detours for motorists.
Elbe Tunnel Closure Details
According to information from Autobahn GmbH Nord, the 37-hour closure in May will only affect the A7 in the direction of Hanover. Specifically, the section between Hamburg-Stellingen and Hamburg-Heimfeld, including the Elbe Tunnel, will be inaccessible. The closures of the Hamburg-Stellingen, -Volkspark, -Bahrenfeld, -Othmarschen, -Waltershof, -Hausbruch, and -Heimfeld junctions will commence an hour earlier, at 5 AM on Saturday, May 9.
Originally, a full closure of the A7 from Friday to Monday was planned for this May date. However, in consideration of the Port Anniversary, this closure has been reduced to Saturday and Sunday and limited to one direction, according to Autobahn GmbH Nord. A complete cancellation of the closure was not possible.
Recommended Detours During the Closure
Motorists traveling south during the closure are advised to exit the motorway at the Neumünster-Süd junction, take the B205, and then switch to the A21 at the Wahlstedt junction. At the Bargteheide interchange, drivers should then take the A1 towards Bremen. From the Horster Dreieck, it is possible to rejoin the A7.
Further Closures in 2026
In addition to the May closure, three more 55-hour full closures of the Elbe Tunnel are expected until the end of September. Unlike previous years, the main travel season in July and August will be exempt from these closures. However, changes to these dates are still possible:
- May 9-10: 37 hours, from Saturday 6 AM to Sunday 7 PM
- June 12-15: 55 hours, from Friday 10 PM to Monday 5 AM
- September 11-14: 55 hours, from Friday 10 PM to Monday 5 AM
- September 25-28: 55 hours, from Friday 10 PM to Monday 5 AM
The Schnelsen Tunnel, also on the A7 in Hamburg, will also be fully closed once in 2026. This closure is scheduled from Friday, June 26, 10 PM, to Monday, June 29, 5 AM. The Elbe Tunnel will be fully accessible during this weekend.
During a full closure of the Schnelsen Tunnel on the A7, traffic will be extensively diverted via the A1, A21, and B205, particularly through the Buchholz/Horst Triangle and the Neumünster-Süd junction. Local detours through Hamburg will be set up for local traffic.
Elbe Tunnel Control System Upgrade
A significant portion of the weekend closures in the Elbe Tunnel are due to the renewal of the Elbe Tunnel calculator, which is the control system in the traffic control center. According to Carsten Butenschön, Director of Autobahn-Nord, this extensive upgrade is necessary because 15 motorway tunnels will be managed from the Elbe Tunnel in the future.
A7: Germany’s Crucial North-South Connection
The A7, stretching from Füssen to Kassel to Flensburg, is Germany’s most important north-south connection and, at 962 kilometers, the longest German motorway. For years, the Hanover-Hamburg section has consistently ranked among the top ten most congested long-distance motorways. In the Hamburg area, it experiences particularly heavy traffic due to commuters and long-distance travelers.
It is estimated that more than 130,000 vehicles use the section between Waltershof and Volkspark daily. Together with the A23, the A7 connects Hamburg Airport and Hamburg Port with the western and northern surroundings.
