Munich’s Ludwigstrasse Redesign Competition Decided: Focus on Climate-Responsible Urban Development
Munich, May 4, 2026 – The urban planning competition for the redesign of Ludwigstrasse, a prominent artery in Munich’s city center, has concluded with the selection of a winning proposal. The decision marks a significant step towards transforming the area into a more pedestrian-friendly and climate-responsible urban space. The winning visualization was presented by MDP Michel Desvigne Paysagiste.
The redesign project is intricately linked with the planned renovation of the intermediate level at the Odeonsplatz subway station by Stadtwerke München (SWM) and Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG), and the subsequent restoration of the surface. This integrated approach aims to create a cohesive and functional urban environment.
Alternative Space Allocation for Enhanced Urban Quality
A crucial factor enabling this transformation is the recently established option for motorized traffic, coming from the north via the Oskar-von-Miller-Ring, to access the Altstadtring. This re-routing opens up considerable potential for an alternative allocation of space along Ludwigstrasse.
Currently, Ludwigstrasse accommodates up to six lanes of traffic in the section between Brienner Strasse and Oskar-von-Miller-Ring. Future plans envision reducing this to just two lanes. This reduction will allow for a comprehensive reorganization of various modes of transport, including bus services, in the southern part of Ludwigstrasse. The reclaimed space will be dedicated to enhancing the quality of stay and design, fostering a more inviting and aesthetically pleasing environment for residents and visitors alike.
The competition entries were guided by a master solution for the reallocation of traffic areas, which was approved by the city council and coordinated with monument protection authorities. The overarching goal of the competition was to achieve a climate-responsible design, emphasizing sustainability and ecological considerations in urban development.
Exhibition of Designs and Further Information
All submitted designs from the competition will be on public display at the Oskar von Miller Forum (Oskar-von-Miller-Ring 25) from May 26 to June 7. This exhibition provides an opportunity for the public to view the various proposals and understand the different visions for Ludwigstrasse’s future. Further information regarding the competition entries can be found online at stadt.muenchen.de/infos/neugestaltung-ludwigstrasse.
The redesign of Ludwigstrasse represents a forward-thinking approach to urban planning in Munich, aiming to create a more livable, sustainable, and aesthetically rich city center for all.
