Munich’s Giesinger Bräu Brings ‘Stehausschank’ Concept to Augsburg
Augsburg, May 7, 2026 – Giesinger Bräu, a celebrated Munich brewery, is poised to introduce its distinctive ‘Stehausschank’ concept to Augsburg. The new establishment, located at Maximilianstraße 49, is slated to open on July 1st, marking the brewery’s first venture of this kind outside the Bavarian capital.
A Modern Take on Bavarian Tradition
The ‘Stehausschank’ embodies a straightforward yet engaging concept: patrons gather, typically standing, to enjoy beer in a convivial atmosphere. The model eschews extensive menus and reservations, encouraging a casual and spontaneous social experience. “Guests stop by for a quick one, two, or three ‘Halbe’ (half-liter beers), meet acquaintances, and move on,” explains Steffen Marx, founder and managing director of Giesinger Bräu, describing the idea as a contemporary interpretation of an old Bavarian tradition.
The choice of Maximilianstraße was deliberate. Marx emphasized the desire to be in the heart of the city’s vibrant life, stating, “We want to be where life happens. In city squares, right in the thick of things. And above all: to get into conversation with people.”
Giesinger Bräu: From Garage to Second-Largest Private Brewery
Founded in 2006 in a garage in Munich’s Giesing district, Giesinger Bräu has rapidly ascended to become the second-largest private brewery in Munich. Despite its relatively short history compared to other established breweries, it has earned a reputation as a ‘cult brewery’. The company’s mission is to produce typical Munich beers and other specialty brews using traditional methods, thereby continuing the rich brewing heritage of Munich.
The new Augsburg location is currently undergoing renovations. Once open, the ‘Stehausschank’ plans to operate until 2 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. Giesinger Bräu currently operates nine such locations in Munich.
Maximilianstraße Sees Further Gastronomic Development
In addition to Giesinger Bräu’s arrival, Maximilianstraße is experiencing other new developments in its gastronomic scene. The former premises of the Tex-Mex chain Sausalitos will soon house “Kneipe 80.” This establishment promises a simple pub concept, featuring relatively affordable prices and 80s music. “Kneipe 80” also originates from Munich and is now expanding beyond the capital, with its opening expected shortly after renovations are complete.
These new additions underscore a growing trend of Munich-based hospitality concepts seeking to expand their presence in other Bavarian cities, bringing their unique flavors and traditions to new audiences.
