Hamburg, May 11 – Female employees at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) may have been spied on with a hidden camera discovered in a changing room. The Hamburg Senate confirmed the incident in response to an inquiry from the Left Party. The “Hamburger Abendblatt” was the first to report on the case.
Camera Concealed in a Shoe
According to the Senate’s response to the parliamentary inquiry, the camera was hidden inside a shoe. The perpetrator(s) had cut a hole in the front of the shoe, precisely fitting the lens. The camera was discovered by chance by an employee, who immediately informed her superiors.
The identity of the perpetrator(s) remains unknown. It is also unclear what the camera recorded and whether it was actually switched on. The police have taken over the investigation.
Incident Occurred in December
The changing room where the camera was found is accessible via a numerical code to approximately 60 female UKE employees. The incident itself occurred in December but only became public through the Left Party’s inquiry.
This is not the first such incident to cause a stir in Hamburg. Recently, a secretly installed camera in a police station attracted attention, where an officer allegedly filmed female colleagues showering. An investigation against him is currently underway.
Further Developments at UKE
This incident adds to a series of recent developments at UKE. Following corruption allegations, UKE has suspended a third person, who works for a subsidiary responsible for maintaining the clinic’s buildings. Allegations of bribery at a UKE subsidiary have reportedly been known for some time, with the public prosecutor’s office initiating initial investigations three years ago.
