Hamburg residents should be aware of significant changes to waste management services during the upcoming public holidays of Ascension Day and Pentecost. According to the Hamburg City Cleaning (Stadtreinigung Hamburg), recycling centers will be closed, and regular waste collection schedules will be altered.

Recycling Centers: Closed on Public Holidays

All recycling centers in Hamburg will be closed on the following public holidays:

  • Ascension Day: Thursday, May 14, 2026
  • Pentecost Monday: Monday, May 25, 2026

Please plan your visits to the recycling centers accordingly to avoid inconvenience.

Waste Collection: Delayed by One Day

The waste collection schedule will be shifted by one day for both holiday periods. This means your trash bins will be emptied a day later than usual.

Ascension Day Period (May 14-15, 2026)

  • Thursday, May 14 (Ascension Day): No collection.
  • Friday, May 15: Collection for Thursday’s schedule.
  • Saturday, May 16: Collection for Friday’s schedule.

Pentecost Period (Week of May 25, 2026)

For the entire week following Pentecost Monday (May 25, 2026), all waste collections will be delayed by one day. For example, if your usual collection day is Monday, it will be moved to Tuesday, and so on.

  • Monday, May 25 (Pentecost Monday): No collection.
  • Tuesday, May 26: Collection for Monday’s schedule.
  • Wednesday, May 27: Collection for Tuesday’s schedule.
  • Thursday, May 28: Collection for Wednesday’s schedule.
  • Friday, May 29: Collection for Thursday’s schedule.
  • Saturday, May 30: Collection for Friday’s schedule.

Residents are advised to place their bins out on the adjusted collection day. The Stadtreinigung Hamburg recommends checking their official website for any further updates or specific schedule changes for your area.

Why the Changes?

These adjustments are standard procedure during public holidays to allow employees to observe the holidays while ensuring waste management services continue with minimal disruption. The Stadtreinigung Hamburg aims to provide timely service despite the holiday schedule.
