Munich, Bavaria, Germany – The government of Oberbayern has granted approval for the six-lane expansion of the A92 motorway. The decision, made in response to an application from Autobahn GmbH des Bundes – Niederlassung Südbayern, covers the section between the Munich-Feldmoching motorway triangle and the Neufahrn motorway junction near Freising.
Project Details: Six-Lane Expansion and Noise Protection
The approved plan involves adding an additional lane in both directions along the approximately twelve-kilometer stretch of the existing motorway. This measure is designed to enhance the motorway’s capacity and accommodate future traffic demands in the economically dynamic Northern Munich area. A key objective is to alleviate traffic congestion during peak hours, ensuring smoother and more efficient travel.
Furthermore, the project includes provisions for the expansion and new construction of noise barriers in certain sections. These installations are crucial for significantly improving noise protection for residents living along the motorway, particularly those in the Ober- and Unterschleißheim areas.
Reconceptualization of Junctions and Environmental Considerations
The plans also entail a fundamental redesign of the Ober- and Unterschleißheim junctions. These junctions will be adapted to meet current and future traffic efficiency requirements, facilitating better flow and connectivity.
The approval process was extensive, with the government of Oberbayern meticulously reviewing approximately 280 objections from private citizens and 105 statements from authorities, other public interest groups, and recognized associations. These inputs were considered and, where possible, incorporated into the final decision through specific conditions related to nature, landscape, water, soil, and noise protection, as well as agricultural and forestry interests.
To mitigate the environmental impact of the project, ecological compensation measures will be implemented across an area of approximately 34 hectares. These measures aim to offset any adverse effects on nature and the landscape.
Accelerated Preparatory Work and Public Inspection
To expedite the construction process, the government of Oberbayern had already utilized legal provisions under the Federal Trunk Road Act in February 2024. This allowed for the approval of technically complex preparatory work north of the Oberschleißheim regatta course, which has since been completed. This work included the relocation of existing supply and disposal lines, cables, and pipelines within the construction area.
The planning approval decision, along with the approved planning documents, will be made available for public inspection exclusively on the website of the government of Oberbayern at https://s.bayern.de/pfb-strassenrecht-obb from Saturday, May 16, 2026, to Friday, May 29, 2026, inclusive. Individuals without internet access can view the documents by prior appointment at the government of Oberbayern, Maximilianstraße 39, 80538 Munich, Room 4120. Appointments can be scheduled by calling +49 (0)89 2176-2833 or -2122.
Future Implementation and Project Oversight
Should no legal remedies be filed against the planning approval decision, the further implementation of the project will fall under the responsibility of Autobahn GmbH des Bundes – Niederlassung Südbayern, as the project developer.
