Berlin Shower Mobiles for Homeless Embark on Awareness Journey to Rome
Berlin, May 15, 2026 – Two Berlin shower mobiles, dedicated to serving the homeless, have commenced a significant journey to Rome. This tour, which includes intermediate stops in Würzburg, Nuremberg, and Munich, is scheduled to conclude on May 21. Its primary objective is to raise public awareness regarding the challenging situation faced by homeless individuals.
The vehicles are an initiative of the Social Service of Catholic Women (SKF) in Berlin and typically operate at various locations across the capital. During their travels, the women’s shower mobile and the “soapbox” for young people will inform communities about the hygiene facilities available to homeless persons and distribute essential hygiene products. It is important to note that showering will not be possible within the mobiles during transit.
Upon their arrival in Rome, the vehicles are slated to receive a blessing from Berlin Archbishop Heiner Koch and Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, marking a symbolic moment for the initiative.
Homelessness Increasingly Affects Younger Generations
Dagmar Löttgen, Chairwoman of the SKF Berlin Council, highlighted the growing concern: “Women’s homelessness is a central focus of SKF Berlin’s work – and at the same time, a topic that is still not sufficiently visible in society. Many women live in hidden homelessness, in dependencies, or precarious transitional situations.” She further noted that young people are increasingly affected by homelessness and often fall through existing support systems.
Through this campaign, SKF Berlin aims to integrate its experiences into a broader European context. The organization seeks to demonstrate viable solutions to achieve the European Union’s shared goal of eradicating homelessness by 2030.
The initiative underscores the critical need for continued efforts to address homelessness, particularly among vulnerable populations such as women and youth, and to foster greater societal understanding and support for those without stable housing.
