Hamburg Honors Udo Lindenberg’s 80th Birthday with Special Edition Bus
Hamburg, May 15 – In anticipation of rock legend Udo Lindenberg’s 80th birthday, the city of Hamburg, in collaboration with Hamburger Hochbahn and singer Jan Delay, has launched a special edition line bus. The unique design, created by a Hamburg student, features a vibrant caricature of Lindenberg and Delay, celebrating the iconic musician.
The bus, which will serve various routes in the southern part of the city, showcases Udo Lindenberg and Jan Delay side-by-side against a rainbow backdrop. A prominent jukebox is visible in the corner, with the inscription “Happy Birthday Udo” above it. This initiative is part of a series of tributes to Lindenberg, who has significantly influenced German music and culture.
Eighth-Grader’s Artwork Adorns Birthday Bus
The colorful caricature of the two music legends, Jan Delay and Udo Lindenberg, originated in 2025 as part of the “PaintBus” school competition. Teoman Baykurt, then an eighth-grade student, secured third place with his artwork, which was subsequently displayed on a wall in Barmbeker Drögestraße. Jan Delay commented on the artwork, stating, “Teoman simply captured the vibe.”
Delay, along with Cläre Bordes, the initiator of the student competition, approached Hochbahn AG with the idea of a rolling birthday gift. The transport company was immediately enthusiastic about the concept. Lindenberg, according to a press release, expressed his delight: “It’s simply gigantic what the young master Teoman has conjured up there. A rolling monument in my adopted home of Hamburg, that’s really big cinema.”
Udo Lindenberg: A Life at the Border
Udo Lindenberg, known for his distinctive voice and iconic style, has been a prominent figure in the German music scene for decades. His career has been marked by a blend of rock, pop, and blues, often incorporating social and political commentary into his lyrics. A storytelling biopic, “Udo. A Life at the Border,” connects German history and contemporary issues with his life story, highlighting his enduring relevance.
“Udoversum” Celebrates Lindenberg’s 80th
The city’s celebration extends beyond the special edition bus. The “Udoversum” exhibition, featuring everything from his famous “Likörelle” paintings to his signature leather jackets, opened to commemorate his 80th birthday. The opening was attended by well-known personalities such as Olivia Jones and Otto Waalkes, who joined in the festivities. A musical gift was also presented during the event, further emphasizing Lindenberg’s impact on the arts.
“We Love Udo”: A Tribute Album
Further demonstrating his widespread influence, a tribute album titled “We Love Udo” has been released. The album features both young voices and established artists, offering interpretations of Lindenberg’s work. It reflects the deep connection and occasional friction that his music evokes, showcasing the breadth of his artistic legacy.
This initiative highlights Hamburg’s appreciation for its cultural icons and its commitment to integrating art into public life, offering a unique way for residents and visitors to celebrate Udo Lindenberg’s milestone birthday.
