Active City Arena Returns to Heiligengeistfeld, Offering Diverse Sports and Olympic Qualification Opportunities
Hamburg, May 21 – The Active City Arena is set to open its doors this Friday on the Heiligengeistfeld, marking its fifth appearance in Hamburg. The mobile stadium will remain a hub of sporting activities until June 7, 2026, directly adjacent to the St. Pauli U-Bahn station.
The arena is designed to showcase sports that are not yet in the mainstream spotlight. This opening weekend will feature Freestyle Football, Beach Handball, and 3×3 Basketball. German teams competing in 3×3 Basketball will be vying for crucial points towards Olympic qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Games, in addition to a total prize fund of 60,000 US dollars.
Free Activities During ‘Urban Sports Week’
From May 28 to May 31, 2026, the Active City Arena will host the ‘Urban Sports Week’, offering free activities for all visitors. This includes unique sports such as Tug-of-War, Beach Hockey, and Pickleball, a dynamic hybrid of table tennis and badminton.
“Queen & King of the Court” to Crown the Arena Season
The Active City Arena’s season will culminate with its traditional highlight: “Queen & King of the Court.” This beach volleyball tournament will see five of the world’s top teams compete for the coveted title. Among the participants are Hamburg’s own Olympic silver medalists, Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler, adding local flair to the international competition.
Record-Breaking Active City Summer Program
This year also marks the eighth edition of Hamburg’s Active City Summer sports program, which has set a new record with an impressive 6,680 course hours available to the public. This extensive offering underscores Hamburg’s commitment to promoting an active lifestyle among its residents.

Hamburg’s substantial investments in sports facilities and its highly active population are central to the city’s ‘Active City’ strategy. “Active City Day” Encourages Movement Across the City
Further promoting physical activity, the “Active City Day” will feature a large movement mile on the Rathausmarkt and approximately 300 participatory activities spread throughout the city. This event aims to inspire Hamburg residents to engage in more exercise and embrace an active lifestyle.
