Hamburg-Harburg Welcomes First Midwifery Center to Support Expectant Mothers
Hamburg, May 21 – Hamburg-Harburg has inaugurated its first midwifery center, located in the Ärztehaus Am Sand, with the goal of enhancing support for expectant mothers and attracting more midwives to the area. The new facility, officially opened yesterday, is designed to alleviate the organizational burden on freelance midwives, allowing them to dedicate more time to their patients.
The concept for the Hamburg-Harburg center is inspired by a successful model implemented in Bremen, where the non-profit Hans Wendt Foundation operates four similar facilities. These centers handle administrative tasks such as paperwork and appointment coordination, which are often significant time-consumers for independent midwives.
Addressing the Midwife Shortage
The establishment of the midwifery center is a direct response to the challenges many expectant mothers in Hamburg face in securing midwifery care. By streamlining administrative processes, the center aims to make the profession more attractive to freelance midwives, thereby increasing the availability of their services in Harburg.
The center provides dedicated spaces for counseling sessions and childbirth preparation courses. It is important to note that while it offers comprehensive support for mothers and midwives, it is not a birthing center. Births will continue to take place in hospitals or at home, with the support of midwives affiliated with the center.
Funding and Initial Success
The new midwifery center is financially supported by the Social Authority, which has committed 190,000 euros annually to its operation. This funding underscores the city’s commitment to improving maternal and infant care services.
Even before its official opening, the center demonstrated significant demand. According to SPD Social Senator Melanie Schlotzhauer, approximately 50 women had already registered for services in the days leading up to the inauguration. This early interest highlights the pressing need for such facilities in the region.
The opening of this center marks a significant step forward for healthcare in Hamburg-Harburg, promising better access to essential midwifery services for the community.
