Berlin, May 22 – New housing construction in Berlin experienced a sharp decline last year, with approximately 11,000 apartments completed, according to data released by the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office. In new buildings, 9,524 apartments were created, marking a decrease of about one-third compared to the previous year’s 14,632 units. This total included 804 apartments in single and two-family homes, and 8,627 apartments in multi-family dwellings.

Construction Senator Surprised by Figures

An additional 1,503 apartments were reported as completed through construction measures on existing buildings, more than doubling the number in this sector. The districts reporting the most completed housing units were Treptow-Köpenick (1,891), Pankow (1,355), and Lichtenberg (1,343). Reinickendorf recorded the lowest number with only 120 units.

Building Senator Christian Gaebler (SPD) described the new figures as “unsatisfactory.” He stated, “They are below experts’ expectations. This is surprising because specialists’ forecasts for the development of completion figures have mostly been reliable in the past.” Gaebler added, “At the same time, the figures show how great the challenges in housing construction continue to be.”

  • New Buildings: 9,524 apartments

The significant drop in new construction highlights ongoing difficulties in meeting Berlin’s housing demand. The city’s administration faces increasing pressure to address these challenges and find effective solutions to stimulate housing development. The unexpected nature of the decline, as noted by Senator Gaebler, suggests a need for a deeper analysis of the factors hindering construction progress and a reevaluation of current strategies.

The housing market in Berlin has been a contentious issue for years, with rising rents and a shortage of affordable housing. The latest figures underscore the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate action from city authorities to prevent further exacerbation of the housing crisis. Experts will likely scrutinize these numbers closely to understand the underlying causes and propose new approaches to boost construction rates. The city’s ability to provide adequate housing for its growing population remains a critical concern, impacting both the economy and the social fabric of Berlin.
