Middle East Airlines Returns to Berlin After 16-Year Hiatus
Middle East Airlines (MEA), a member of the SkyTeam alliance, is set to resume direct flights between Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, and Berlin, Germany. The airline announced its return to the German capital after a 16-year absence, with flights scheduled to commence on June 26, 2026. This move comes despite ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israeli forces, which had previously led MEA to scale back its operations due to safety concerns. The flights are already available for booking.
Key Details of MEA’s Return
- Middle East Airlines returns to Berlin in June after 16 years.
- Four weekly flights are currently planned.
- Business Class tickets are not currently bookable.
MEA Reconnects Beirut with Berlin
MEA plans to operate four weekly flights on the Beirut-Berlin route, utilizing an Airbus A320 aircraft. The frequency is considered moderate for the initial phase of the resumed service. The flight schedule is as follows:
- ME245: Beirut – Berlin | Departure: 9:05 AM, Arrival: 12:05 PM
- ME246: Berlin – Beirut | Departure: 1:05 PM, Arrival: 5:55 PM
These four weekly flights are scheduled for Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Aircraft Configuration and Business Class Availability
Middle East Airlines operates two versions of the Airbus A320. One configuration features an all-Economy Class cabin without dedicated Business Class seats. The second variant includes Business Class seats, arranged in a 2-2 configuration, contrasting with the 3-3 layout of the Economy Class. These Business Class seats, while resembling Premium Economy, offer enhanced comfort, greater legroom, and wider seating compared to standard Economy on an A320.
However, MEA is currently not offering Business Class fares for the Berlin route. This suggests that the airline will initially serve Berlin with an all-Economy Class configuration.
Background to the Resumption
MEA had previously reduced its flight operations in 2023 due to safety concerns stemming from the conflict between Hamas and Israeli forces. The decision to resume flights to Berlin indicates a strategic move by the Beirut-based airline to rebuild its network and potentially capitalize on demand for direct connections between the two cities.
The return of Middle East Airlines to Berlin marks a significant development for travelers seeking direct connections between the Middle East and Germany. It also highlights the airline’s resilience and commitment to its international routes despite regional challenges.
