Man Drowns in Elbe River Near Övelgönne, Hamburg: First Drowning of 2026
Hamburg, May 23 – A large-scale emergency operation unfolded on the Hamburg Elbe on Saturday evening after a 29-year-old man went missing in the water near Övelgönne. Despite extensive search efforts by emergency services, a diver could only recover his body. This incident marks the first drowning fatality in the Elbe for the year 2026.
According to a fire department spokesperson, the body was retrieved from the water around 8:30 PM. The man reportedly disappeared beneath the surface in the early Saturday evening, near the Museumshafen, after being caught by a wave.
Friends Attempt Rescue, Extensive Search Launched
Friends of the 29-year-old pointed rescuers to the last known location where he was seen. His acquaintances reportedly jumped into the water in an attempt to save him but were unable to find him. Emergency services responded with a significant deployment of personnel and equipment.
The search was supported from the air by rescue helicopters Christoph Hansa and Libelle. On the water, various boats from the fire department, DLRG (German Life Saving Association), and police were actively involved in the search operation.
Beach Closed, Psychological Support for Relatives
During the search, the beach near the Museumshafen was closed to visitors, as were several nearby walking paths. Emergency chaplains and a crisis intervention team were on site to provide support to the deceased’s relatives during this difficult time.
City of Hamburg Reiterates Warnings Against Swimming in the Elbe
The city of Hamburg explicitly warns against swimming in the Elbe River. This warning is communicated through its official website, informational flyers, and numerous multilingual signs posted along the riverbanks. The city emphasizes that despite the presence of beautiful sandy beaches, the Elbe does not meet EU requirements for bathing waters at any point.
“For safety reasons, the Elbe is unsuitable for swimming,” states the city’s homepage. The strong currents, unpredictable undertows, and heavy ship traffic make the river extremely dangerous for swimmers, a risk tragically underscored by Saturday’s incident.
This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers of swimming in the Elbe, reinforcing the city’s continuous efforts to educate the public about water safety.
