When the trees around the Alster once again glow pink, it can only mean one thing: Hamburg is celebrating its Cherry Blossom Festival. The festivities kick off on Friday, May 29th, at 10:30 PM with a spectacular firework display over the Outer Alster.
A Long-Standing Tradition: 58 Years of Cherry Blossom Celebrations
The Cherry Blossom Festival, a symbol of spring in Japan, has been celebrated in Hamburg for 58 years. This coming Friday, many Hamburg residents will take to the Alster in boats to witness the fireworks marking the opening of the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival, which will be set off at 10:30 PM.
“Circle of Life” Art Performance
On Saturday, May 30th, from 9:30 PM, the art performance ‘Circle of Life’ will be presented at the Parksee in Planten un Blomen. Artists cc2 and Koho Kurihara will combine elements of calligraphy, light, and sound in this impressive display.
“Japan Festival” in Planten un Blomen
In addition to the celebrations on the Alster, visitors can explore the “Japan Festival” program on Sunday from 11 AM to 6 PM. The German-Japanese Society organizes this festival around the Tea House in the Japanese Garden of Planten un Blomen. Light artists will transform the park lake into a breathtaking spectacle of water, calligraphy, and music.
The History of the Cherry Blossom Festival in Hamburg
The Cherry Blossom Festival originated in the 1960s when the Japanese community in Hamburg donated 5,000 cherry trees. These trees were planted along the Alsterufer, the Kennedy Bridge, at Altonaer Balkon, and in the Alsterkrugchaussee. They were intended to symbolize the gratitude of the merchants and the friendship between Japan and Hamburg.
Cherry Blossom Queen Election to Return in 2027
The election of the Hamburg Cherry Blossom Queen will not take place this year, as it is held only every two years. The next election is scheduled for 2027.
Water Light Concerts in Planten un Blomen
Starting May 1st, the popular concerts with music, light, and water will once again take place in the Hamburg park.
