Munich Mountain Bus Launches Summer Season: Car-Free Access to Alpine Destinations
Munich, May 26 – The Munich Mountain Bus has officially started its summer season, providing an environmentally friendly transportation option for mountain enthusiasts from the state capital. The service, which runs until the end of October, connects Munich with popular excursion destinations in the Alpine foothills, the Bavarian Alps, and even extends into Tyrol.
The Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV) announced that the two bus lines will operate every Saturday, Sunday, and on public holidays throughout the summer months. This initiative aims to make it easier for people to reach areas that are otherwise difficult to access by public transport.
Two Routes for Diverse Alpine Adventures
The service features two distinct routes:
- Line 996: Travels from Munich via Pfronten in Ostallgäu to the Wieskirche in the Weilheim-Schongau district.
- Line 396: Connects the state capital with Thiersee in Tyrol, passing through Bayrischzell, the Leitzachtal, and the Ursprungpass in the Miesbach district.
These routes open up numerous touring possibilities for hikers and climbers, allowing them to explore the region’s natural beauty without the need for a private car.
From Pilot Project to Regular Service
The Mountain Bus originated as a pilot project by the German Alpine Club’s Munich and Oberland section, which operated it for three years. Since 2024, the service has been fully integrated into the MVV network. Passengers can use a valid MVV ticket or the Deutschlandticket to access the service.
Booking and Capacity Information
To ensure a seat, passengers are advised to book through the MVV app. While spontaneous boarding is possible if capacity allows, standing is not permitted as the buses travel on motorways. This ensures safety and comfort for all travelers.
Alpenverein Promotes Car-Free Tours
To further encourage the use of the Mountain Bus, the Alpine Club has compiled a selection of tours that are easily accessible from the bus stops. These routes, along with additional information, can be found on the MVV website at mvv-muenchen.de/bergbus.
Significant Environmental Impact
The Mountain Bus has demonstrated a substantial positive environmental impact. According to the Alpine Club, approximately 11,500 people utilized the service last year, marking a 60 percent increase compared to the previous year. This surge in ridership resulted in the avoidance of over 7,000 car journeys from Munich to the mountains, based on an average car occupancy of 1.5 people.
This initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable tourism and reduce the carbon footprint associated with recreational activities in the Alps. By offering a convenient and affordable alternative to private car travel, the Munich Mountain Bus contributes to preserving the delicate Alpine ecosystem.
