Hamburg, May 27 – Two new nursing homes, managed by Pflegen & Wohnen, have officially commenced operations in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg. The facilities, located adjacent to the Wilhelmsburg community center, replace an older complex of care institutions that had fallen into disrepair. The new buildings, characterized by their bright brick facades and park-like surroundings with direct boat access, offer a total of 300 beds.
New Facilities Address Diverse Care Needs
The newly opened facilities include two distinct nursing homes. One, known as Haus Wilhelmsburg, functions as a standard nursing home, also providing specialized care for individuals with dementia. The second facility is dedicated to residents who have been legally mandated to receive nursing home care, such as those suffering from Korsakoff’s syndrome, a severe brain damage often resulting from chronic alcohol abuse. This specialized care provision is considered unique within Hamburg.
Official Opening Delayed by Water Damage
Social Senator Melanie Schlotzhauer (SPD) presided over the official opening ceremony, noting that the event had been delayed for several months due to water damage in one of the buildings. Senator Schlotzhauer has also served as the head of the supervisory board for Pflegen & Wohnen since the city reacquired the nursing home operator last autumn.
The two homes, situated on Hermann-Westphal-Straße, collectively offer space for over 300 residents. The demolition of the old building complex has created additional open space for future development, though plans for this area have not yet been finalized, according to the Social Senator.
Context: Addressing Care Needs in Hamburg
The opening of these new facilities comes at a time when Hamburg’s care sector faces various challenges. Recently, the Diakonie announced the closure of two nursing homes in Hamburg-the Heinrich-Sengelmann-Haus in St. Georg and the Seniorenhaus Matthäus in Winterhude-resulting in the loss of over 200 care places. In response, Hamburg has also introduced model projects for senior living, with half of the funding for six new projects being covered by care insurance providers.
The city’s commitment to improving care infrastructure is evident in these new developments, aiming to provide modern and specialized care options for its residents. The Pflegen & Wohnen initiative plays a crucial role in managing these facilities, ensuring that the community’s diverse care needs are met.
