Gasteig Celebrates 40 Years with a Marathon of Culture at HP8
Munich, May 29, 2026 – The Gasteig cultural center is breaking tradition by marking its 40th anniversary not with a formal ceremony, but with an ambitious 40-hour non-stop cultural festival. From Friday, June 5th, at 10:00 AM until Sunday, June 7th, at 2:00 AM, Gasteig HP8 will be transformed into a vibrant hub of music, dance, literature, cinema, art, workshops, discussions, and parties, all free of charge to the public.
This unique celebration aims to showcase the full spectrum of cultural offerings from all institutions within the Gasteig family, including the Münchner Stadtbibliothek, Münchner Volkshochschule, Münchner Philharmoniker, Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, and the Münchener Kammerorchester. Munich cultural partners are also contributing to the extensive program.
A Festival for Everyone: Diverse Program Highlights
Stephanie Jenke, Managing Director of Gasteig, emphasized the inclusive nature of the event: “No matter your age, what kind of music or culture you like, whether you’re alone or with family – there’s truly something for everyone during these 40 hours. That’s why we invite everyone to come and celebrate with us.”
The festival schedule reads like a journey through a city that refuses to sleep for two days. The festivities kick off in Hall E with a jazz picnic, while children can dance, craft, and play. Outside, tape artists will be transforming the facades. Later, basketball takes on a rhythmic twist with percussionist Christian Benning, who will combine sport with sound, as Basketball Bundesliga professionals aim for the hoop in Hall E, and visitors are invited to participate.
As evening approaches, the atmosphere will shift to party mode. Hall X will reverberate with the sounds of doom metal bands throughout the night. On the Kulturinsel, hundreds will dance at a silent disco using headphones. In the Isarphilharmonie, indie-pop singer Soffie will perform for free, preceded by a secret guest as a birthday surprise.
Overnight Experiences and Early Morning Raves
The night on Friday won’t end with the last concert. Instead, Hall E will transform into a cinema for “Filmfest München goes Gasteig HP8,” offering a long night of films featuring highlights from previous Filmfest years. Attendees are encouraged to bring sleeping bags and mats, with headphones available for rent against a deposit.
Those expecting a quieter Saturday morning will be mistaken. At 6:00 AM, a rave will ignite the dance floor, hosted by the “Wake Up Society Munich.” Following this, artists, musicians, and performers from across the Gasteig family will take over, presenting rap and juggling, screen printing and animation, chamber music and poetry. Literature will meet dance, and classical music will blend with club nights.
Particularly impressive moments are anticipated where music becomes visible and tangible. Inclusive formats such as “Feel the Music” and “Tanzt Gebärdenpoesie” will translate sound into movement. Furthermore, the Münchener Kammerorchester will allow audience members to sit directly within the orchestra.
“This truly embodies the most beautiful idea of this weekend,” said Stephanie Jenke. “To present Gasteig as an open and pulsating place. To experience culture as an encounter, as an experiment. As an invitation to simply come and let yourself be carried away.”
