Dominik Kahun Returns to EHC Red Bull Munich: A Star’s Homecoming

Munich, May 29, 2026 – EHC Red Bull Munich announced today the return of Dominik Kahun, an ex-NHL player and prominent German national team member. Kahun, 30, is rejoining the Red Bulls after an eight-year absence, leaving Swiss first-division club Lausanne HC. He will once again wear his familiar number 21 jersey.

A Triumphant Return to Familiar Ice

Kahun previously played for EHC Red Bull Munich from 2014 to 2018, during which time he won three consecutive German championships. In 206 DEL games for the Red Bulls, the technically skilled left-shot forward amassed 149 points (48 goals, 101 assists) before making the leap to the NHL.

Christian Winkler, Managing Director Sports at Red Bull Ice Hockey, expressed his excitement: “We, the entire Red Bull organization, are incredibly happy about Dominik’s return. Contact has never been lost over the years, and Dominik has always spoken of home in connection with the Red Bulls. When the opportunity arose to bring Dominik back in his prime, we pulled out all the stops to make it happen. It required a lot of patience, but both sides signaled from the beginning that they absolutely wanted it. His goals and our goals, to be successful as a team, have never changed. His playing class, his speed, and his experience will help the entire team.”

Dominik Kahun himself shared his enthusiasm: “It feels like a big and emotional homecoming. It’s the perfect time for me and my family to put down roots here. I feel proud and incredibly excited to be back here and to play in Munich. I already get goosebumps thinking about my first game in the new arena and stepping onto the ice in front of the fans again. I have big goals with the club, and I think I speak for the whole team when I say: I want to lift a trophy here again.”

A Career Defined by Excellence: NHL, Olympics, and World Championships

After his successful tenure in Munich, Kahun moved to the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL in 2018. In his rookie season, he played all 82 regular-season games. He also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Buffalo Sabres, and Edmonton Oilers, accumulating 188 NHL games and 83 points.

In 2021, Kahun moved to the Swiss National League (NL) with SC Bern, where he was one of the league’s most prolific offensive players for several years, recording 168 points in 211 NL games. In the 2023/24 season, he was the top assist provider in the highest Swiss league with 35 assists. Most recently, the German international played for Lausanne HC.

Kahun has also been a pivotal player for the German national team, having played 116 international games. He has participated in eight World Championships and three Olympic Games. His most significant achievements with the national team include winning the Olympic silver medal in Pyeongchang in 2018 and World Championship silver in 2023.

Kahun’s return strengthens an already formidable EHC Red Bull Munich roster for the upcoming 2026/27 season. The team boasts a strong lineup of goaltenders, defenders, and forwards, aiming for continued success.
