Hamburg, June 3 – Four alleged members of a large-scale forgery ring have been on trial at the Hamburg Regional Court since Wednesday. They are accused of falsifying and selling documents, with prosecutors seeking lengthy prison sentences.
Allegations of Extensive Document Forgery and Illicit Earnings
The public prosecutor’s office believes the four defendants acted as a criminal gang, generating more than 160,000 Euros from their forgeries. The accused reportedly sold various documents, including registration certificates, ID cards, and tax assessments, which bore official stamps from EU member states.
Facilitating Entry and Work Rights for Third-Country Nationals
The clientele for these forged documents primarily consisted of individuals from so-called third countries, who sought to acquire entry and work rights within the EU. The defendants are alleged to have either forged these documents themselves or procured fraudulent papers from other sources.
Key Defendant Admits Guilt
A 46-year-old woman from Ukraine is central to the case. She is believed to have acted as the liaison between the clients and the forgers. She has already confessed during the preliminary investigation.
Plea Bargain Discussions and Potential Sentences
Prior to the trial, discussions were held among all parties regarding potential sentences for the defendants. The public prosecutor indicated that, in the event of comprehensive confessions, the main defendant could face up to seven and a half years in prison. The other defendants could receive sentences ranging from three to five and a half years.
