Doctors in Hamburg Plan Protest Against Health Reform

Hamburg, June 5 – Many doctor’s offices in Hamburg are expected to remain closed on Wednesday morning, June 10, between 8 and 10 AM. Several professional associations have called for a protest against the reform plans of federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU).

Concerns Over Fee Cuts and Patient Care

General practitioners fear significant cuts to their fees due to the planned health reform. They also warn of negative consequences for patients, including longer waiting times and a potential halt to accepting new patients.

Savings Package to Relieve Health Insurance Funds

The savings package, initiated by the federal cabinet, aims to relieve statutory health insurance funds by more than 16 billion euros next year. Without these measures, an even larger financial deficit in the health insurance system is anticipated.

State Governments Criticize Draft Law

Criticism of the plans comes not only from doctors but also from state governments. On Friday, June 12, the Bundestag will debate the draft law, and the Health Ministers’ Conference has also placed it on its agenda. Given the already tense mood among doctors for weeks, many practices are expected to participate in the protest day next Wednesday.

The last time doctor’s offices in Hamburg closed in protest against federal government policy was four years ago, in September 2022.

Background: Four Years Since Last Major Protest

The German Medical Association in Hanover has recognized the need for reform, for example, regarding a sugar tax, but criticism of the planned reforms outweighs this, according to reporter Bertil Starke. The federal government reached an agreement on health reform on Wednesday, which will include a sugar levy.
