Ironman Hamburg 2026: Your Essential Guide to Road Closures and Traffic Disruptions

The highly anticipated Ironman triathlon returns to Hamburg on Sunday, June 7, 2026, bringing with it a spectacular display of athleticism but also extensive traffic changes. Approximately 3,000 athletes from 60 nations will participate, impacting routes for swimming, cycling, and running across the city. This guide provides all the necessary information for residents and visitors to navigate Hamburg during the event.

Key Road Closures and Timings

Road closures will begin on Thursday evening, June 4, with the Jungfernstieg being the first to close in both directions. The majority of closures will be in effect from 6:00 AM to approximately 5:30 PM on Sunday, June 7. The last closures are expected to be lifted by Monday morning, June 8.

Interactive Map and PDF Information

An interactive map detailing all road closures by time and location is available on the organizer’s website. Additionally, a comprehensive PDF document with traffic information can be downloaded. For residents of Bergedorf, a separate PDF provides specific details due to the significant disruptions in that area. The Zollenspieker ferry, for example, will only transport cars from 2:00 PM on Sunday.

The Race Course Overview

  • Swimming: Athletes will start at the Alsteranleger on Jungfernstieg, swimming 3.8 kilometers through the Binnenalster and Außenalster.
  • Cycling: The 177-kilometer cycling route consists of two laps. It begins at Ballindamm, heading west past Speicherstadt, Landungsbrücken, Reeperbahn, and Altona Town Hall to Othmarschen. The return leg goes via Elbchaussee, past Fischmarkt, through St. Georg, and then out to the Vier- und Marschlande in southeast Hamburg, before returning.
  • Running: The marathon segment covers 42.2 kilometers over four laps, winding along the western Alsterufer and through Hamburg city center, with the finish line at Rathausmarkt.

Major Traffic Restrictions and Detours

Several key areas will experience significant closures:

  • Jungfernstieg: Closed in both directions from Thursday evening, June 4.
  • Sengelmann Tunnel (Airport): Closed for renovation work from Saturday morning, June 6, 6:00 AM, until Sunday evening, June 7, 8:00 PM. This affects the northern bypass of the city center via B433. Detours will be via Alsterkrugchaussee and Flughafenstraße.
  • Lombardsbrücke: Fully closed on Sunday, June 7, from 1:00 AM to midnight. The Kennedybrücke will remain fully passable in both directions.
  • Wallring Tunnel: Closed in both directions on Sunday, June 7, from 1:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The direction towards Lombardsbrücke will remain closed until midnight. The Deichtortunnel will be passable in both directions.
  • Hafencity: Accessible via Oberhafenbrücke. Access via Oberbaumbücke will not be possible on Sunday from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM.
  • Western Außenalster: The running track will be closed on Sunday from 10:30 AM to 11:30 PM.

Organizers recommend using B5 and B75 as alternative routes for car traffic.

Public Transport Alternatives

The Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (HVV) advises commuters to switch to U-Bahn (subway) and S-Bahn (urban rail) services due to massive traffic restrictions. However, be aware of the following disruptions:

  • S-Bahn: No S-Bahn services between Stellingen and Altona/Holstenstraße on Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7. Replacement buses will operate for S3 (Pinneberg-Neugraben) and S5 (Elbgaustraße-Neugraben) lines.
  • U-Bahn U3: Operations between Barmbek and Mundsburg are suspended until July 5 due to bridge renovations.

For detailed public transport information, visit hvv.de or call the HVV hotline.

Accessibility During the Event

  • Central Station: Remains accessible for car traffic, but the Lombardsbrücke will be closed. Alternative access routes include Kennedybrücke, An der Alster, Sechslingspforte, Steindamm, Kreuzweg, Adenauer Allee, Steintorplatz, and Kirchenallee.
  • Binnenalster and southern Außenalster: Closed to boat traffic from Saturday afternoon, June 6.
