Berlin, June 6 – Thousands of citizens flocked to the Red Town Hall yesterday for its annual Open House Day, with the Senate Chancellery reporting a total of 7,000 guests. The event provided an opportunity for the public to explore Berlin’s seat of government in the Mitte district, gain insight into its operations, and engage directly with politicians, including Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU).
High Public Interest in Senate’s Work
The event, held for the second time, saw significant interest, with long queues forming at the entrance at various times. According to a Senate spokesperson, discussion sessions with key political figures such as Governing Mayor Kai Wegner, Senator for Economic Affairs Franziska Giffey (SPD), and Senator for Finance Stefan Evers (CDU), along with the state secretaries of the Senate Chancellery, proved particularly popular. Visitors were also granted access to the Governing Mayor’s office, the Senate chamber, and other facilities within the historic building.
Special Attractions for Young Visitors and Families
The Open House Day included several special offers designed for children and families. A scavenger hunt allowed younger visitors to explore the building in an engaging and fun way. A highlight for many was the children’s press conference, where young attendees had the unique chance to pose questions directly to Governing Mayor Kai Wegner. Furthermore, Berlin’s bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games was presented, and two mobile city offices were on-site to provide information and services.
Dialogue and Democracy at the Forefront
Governing Mayor Kai Wegner, who hosted the event, expressed his delight at the high turnout and the public’s keen interest in the work of the Senate Chancellery and the Senate. “Our democracy thrives on dialogue,” Wegner stated. He emphasized the importance of such events in fostering citizen engagement: “At the open house at the Red Town Hall, we engage with citizens to discuss how our democracy works-and how we can strengthen and protect it.”
This year’s attendance of 7,000 guests, while slightly lower than the approximately 8,300 visitors recorded last year, still underscores a strong public desire to connect with their government and understand its functions. The event serves as a vital platform for transparency and direct communication between the citizens of Berlin and their elected representatives.
The Red Town Hall, a prominent landmark in Berlin, continues to open its doors to the public, reinforcing the principles of open governance and civic participation. The success of the Open House Day highlights the ongoing commitment of the Berlin Senate to engage with its constituents and promote an informed and active citizenry.
