Dennis Thering Re-elected as Hamburg CDU Leader with 86.7% of Votes
Hamburg, June 6 – During the Hamburg CDU party conference in Wilhelmsburg, Dennis Thering was re-elected as state chairman for another two years on Saturday. He received 86.7 percent of the votes from over 200 delegates, according to the CDU.
Thering ran unopposed in the election held at the Bürgerhaus Wilhelmsburg. He expressed satisfaction with the result, despite the approval being slightly lower than two years ago. In February 2024, he had garnered 94.4 percent of the votes. “Overall, it is a strong result that we are happy about. We are on a good path,” Thering stated. He has been in office since April 2023, having previously taken over the leadership of the CDU parliamentary group in the Hamburg Parliament three years prior.
Thering Criticizes Tschentscher Over Olympia Vote
Prior to his re-election, Thering voiced significant criticism of the red-green Senate. His remarks focused on issues such as the Köhlbrand Bridge, housing construction, the Bahrenfeld waste incineration plant, and the failed Olympia referendum.
He attributed the referendum’s failure to Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD), stating, “This result is a vote of no confidence against the Senate and a vote of no confidence against Peter Tschentscher.” Thering further claimed that the Senate turns “every major project in this city into a risk for the people of Hamburg.” He questioned whether Tschentscher still possessed the strength to address the city’s crucial future challenges.
“The Greens Simply Can’t Do It”
Thering reiterated his demand for a government statement and specifically targeted the Green party, asserting, “The Greens are simply the wrong coalition partner. They simply can’t do it.” In contrast, he described the CDU as more motivated than ever. “We are the drivers of the future for this city (…) with the clear goal of taking responsibility in the Senate again after the next Hamburg election.”
His speech, lasting over 30 minutes, concluded with strong applause from party members. The four deputy CDU chairpersons, Anke Frieling, Philipp Heißner, Natalie Hochheim, and Christoph de Vries, were also confirmed in their positions without opposition.
