Doctors’ Practices in Hamburg to Close in Protest Against Health Reform

Hamburg, June 10 – Many doctors’ practices in Hamburg are expected to remain closed on Wednesday morning, June 10, between 8 and 10 AM. Several professional associations have called for a protest against the reform plans of Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU). The Kassenärzte (association of statutory health insurance physicians) fear significant cuts in their fees due to the planned health reform. They also warn of consequences for patients, such as longer waiting times and a stop to accepting new patients.

Savings Package to Relieve Health Insurance Funds

The savings package, initiated by the federal cabinet, aims to relieve statutory health insurance funds by more than 16 billion euros next year. Without this measure, an even larger financial gap is anticipated for the health insurance funds.

Uncertainty Regarding Participation

It remains unclear how many practices will close on Wednesday morning. The organizers of the protest expect more than half of all specialist practices to participate in the action. ENT doctors even anticipate that almost all of their practices will join the protests. In contrast, the general practitioners’ association expects significantly less participation, stating that the willingness to strike is limited, according to an inquiry from NDR 90.3.

The last time doctors’ practices in Hamburg closed in protest against federal government policy was four years ago, in September 2022.

City Prepares for Potential Strike Impact

The city of Hamburg is preparing for potential disruptions caused by the doctors’ protest. While the exact number of participating practices is still unknown, authorities are monitoring the situation to ensure essential medical services remain accessible. Patients are advised to contact their practices in advance to confirm opening hours on Wednesday morning.

This protest highlights ongoing tensions between the medical community and the government over healthcare reforms. The outcome of these discussions could have long-term implications for both healthcare providers and patients in Germany.
