A7 Closure and Elbtunnel Shutdown Cause Major Traffic Chaos in Hamburg

Hamburg, June 14, 2026 – Drivers in Hamburg faced significant challenges over the weekend as major sections of the A7 motorway, including the Elbtunnel, and the Köhlbrandbrücke were fully closed due to extensive construction work. The closures, which began Friday evening and are scheduled to last until Monday morning, led to considerable traffic chaos, especially in the southern areas of the city.

Widespread Disruptions Across Hamburg’s Road Network

The weekend closure of the A7 between the Stellingen and Heimfeld junctions, encompassing the vital Elbtunnel, coupled with the simultaneous shutdown of the Köhlbrandbrücke, created a bottleneck effect throughout Hamburg’s road network. Traffic on the access roads to the Elbe bridges, particularly on the B4 in Hammerbrook, the A255 on the Veddel, and the A1 between Billstedt and Stillhorn, was severely congested. Drivers attempting to enter or exit the city reported journey times extended by almost an hour.

Even the inner city experienced significant traffic jams, with the Wallringtunnel near the main station being particularly affected. Further compounding the issue, the Ballindamm was also closed for the “Women’s Run” event, adding to the urban congestion.

A7 Full Closure to Last Until Monday Morning

The full closure of the A7, spanning the section between Hamburg-Stellingen and -Heimfeld and including the Elbtunnel, commenced on Friday evening and is expected to be lifted by 5 AM on Monday morning in both directions. Regional and long-distance traffic has been advised to use alternative routes via the A1, A21, and B205 to circumvent the affected area.

For traffic traveling from the south towards Flensburg or Kiel, the recommended diversion starts at the Buchholz or Horster motorway triangles, leading onto the A1 north via the Maschener Kreuz. From there, drivers should take the A21 towards Kiel at the Bargteheide junction, then proceed onto the B205, which connects to the A7 near Neumünster-Süd.

Conversely, traffic from the north heading towards Hanover or the south is being redirected from the Neumünster-Süd junction (15) onto the B205, continuing on the A21 until the Bargteheide junction. Here, the route diverts onto the A1 southbound, which ultimately leads back to the A7 via the Maschener Kreuz.

Köhlbrandbrücke Also Closed, Adding to Woes

The Köhlbrandbrücke’s closure further exacerbated the traffic situation. Large and heavy-duty transports were advised to utilize the last available rest areas, as passage in either direction was impossible. Additionally, a cluster of construction sites in the Altes Land region and Finkenwerder contributed to localized congestion. Numerous demonstrations in the Hamburg city center also led to further road closures.

The Köhlbrandbrücke is undergoing repair and maintenance work, necessitating its full closure. The Elbtunnel’s closure is attributed to ongoing work on the new Tunnel Control Center (TLZ). During this June closure, the operational technology of the Elbtunnel is being integrated into the TLZ, a process that requires the complete shutdown of the route, as confirmed by Autobahn GmbH Nord. Neighboring projects, including the Altona Noise Barrier Tunnel and the K20 Elbmarsch Elevated Road, are also utilizing this full closure period for their respective works.

Future Closures Planned

Further closures of the A7 are already scheduled for later in the year:

  • June 26 to 29, 2026: A7 Schnelsen Tunnel 55-hour full closure, excluding the Elbtunnel (including integration of the Schnelsen Tunnel Control Center).
  • September 11 to 14, 2026: A7 55-hour full closure (including work on the Altona cover and the tunnel control center).
  • September 25 to 28, 2026: A7 55-hour full closure (including work on the K20 Elevated Road).

The concentration of construction sites has raised concerns about potential traffic chaos in the Altes Land and Finkenwerder regions, prompting questions about coordination failures.
