Hamburg, June 16, 2026 – Alexandra-Gwyn Paetz, Head of Department at the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), visited the DLR Quantum Computing Initiative (DLR QCI) in Hamburg on June 10, 2026. During her visit to the Hamburg Innovation Center, she engaged in discussions with Robert Axmann, head of DLR QCI, and representatives from the city of Hamburg. The central topic of conversation was how to foster strong ecosystems that bring together startups, industry, and research to enable sovereign and competitive quantum computing in Germany.

Pioneering Quantum Computing in Hamburg

The DLR QCI operates a unique pilot line for the production of ion trap quantum processors at the Hamburg Innovation Center. This facility is the only one of its kind in Germany, underscoring Hamburg’s pivotal role in the advancement of quantum technology. Adjacent to the 300-square-meter cleanroom, startups are actively building quantum computers. These quantum machines are then made available to DLR QCI application teams, comprising researchers, industrial partners, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), for various applications and development.

The visit was initiated by the city of Hamburg, which brought together representatives from local authorities, companies, and research organizations for a site presentation. This collaborative effort highlights the region’s commitment to becoming a leading hub for quantum computing innovation.

Discussions on Technological Challenges and Opportunities

During her tour, Ms. Paetz met with Robert Axmann in the laser laboratory of the QSea II quantum computer project, which is part of the DLR QCI. The QSea II project is a key initiative within the DLR QCI, aiming to push the boundaries of quantum processor development.
