Eichtalpark in Hamburg-Wandsbek Reopens as ‘Climate Park’ After Extensive Renovation
Hamburg, June 20 – Eichtalpark in Hamburg-Wandsbek has officially reopened following an extensive, two-year renovation project. The park, now designated as a ‘climate park,’ aims to offer more pleasant recreational spaces for visitors and improved living conditions for animals. The grand reopening took place on Saturday, marking a significant milestone for the 100-year-old green space.
Ready for Climate Change
The renovation, completed just in time for the park’s centenary, focused on making Eichtalpark resilient to climate change. Newly planted trees have been selected for their ability to withstand extreme weather conditions. Visitors can learn about climate adaptation strategies at eleven information stations located throughout the park.
‘Oasis of Calm’ and New Footbridge
A new pedestrian bridge now allows for a complete circular walk through the park. An ‘oasis of calm’ has been created, featuring sun loungers and hammocks, providing visitors with tranquil spots to relax and unwind.
Enhanced Habitats for Wildlife
The renovation also significantly benefits the park’s wildlife. New wetlands have been created, expanding habitats for reptiles. These areas can be observed from designated jetties and an accessible ‘riverside balcony.’ Fish now have a dedicated passage to swim upstream along the Wandse river. Additionally, the perennial garden boasts a greater variety of insect-friendly plants, promoting biodiversity.
Four Million Euro Investment
The comprehensive renovation project, costing nearly four million euros, was jointly funded by the city and federal government. The reopening celebration included a diverse program of music, guided tours, and interactive activities for all ages.
A Special Gem: The Botanical Garden Wandsbek
Wandsbek is also home to a unique botanical garden, which originated as a school garden in 1926. This special attraction further enhances the area’s natural appeal.
