Munich, June 23 – Two power outages impacted areas surrounding Munich Central Station on Tuesday afternoon, affecting a total of over 1,450 customers. The disruptions, caused by a technical defect, primarily hit the northern district of the station, with a smaller incident occurring earlier in the southern part.
Northern District Sees Major Outage, Bavarian Broadcasting House Affected
The more significant power outage occurred in the northern district of Munich Central Station on Tuesday afternoon. According to a spokesperson for the Munich City Utilities (SWM), up to 1,300 customers were left without electricity. Among those affected was the Bavarian Broadcasting House, which, however, was able to maintain operations thanks to an emergency power generator.
SWM initiated a phased restoration of power to the affected households. The spokesperson confirmed that the public transport network, including the U-Bahn, trams, and trains at the Central Station, remained unaffected by the outage.
Earlier Incident in Southern District
Earlier on Tuesday, around 2:30 PM, the southern district of the Central Station also experienced a power outage. This incident affected approximately 150 customers, as reported by SWM. Both power outages have since been resolved, according to the SWM fault indicator.
Technical Defect Cited as Cause
The cause of both power outages was attributed to a “technical defect,” leading to interruptions in the power supply. The Abendzeitung was the first to report on these incidents.
These power outages highlight the importance of robust infrastructure and emergency preparedness in major urban centers. While the disruptions were relatively short-lived and did not impact critical public transport, they underscore the challenges of maintaining a consistent power supply in a densely populated area like Munich.
Further details regarding the specific nature of the technical defect have not yet been released by SWM.
