Michael Owen Criticizes Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich Move, Calls Bundesliga ‘Average’

Former England international and Sky Sport pundit Michael Owen has sparked debate with his recent comments regarding Harry Kane’s transfer to Bayern Munich. In a column for the Daily Mail, Owen, a former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker, expressed his strong disapproval of Kane’s decision to leave the Premier League for the Bundesliga.

Kane ‘Better Than the Bundesliga,’ Says Owen

Owen, who considers Harry Kane the greatest English striker of all time, believes Kane’s move to Germany was a misstep. “My only criticism of Harry is his move to Bayern Munich,” Owen wrote. He praised Kane’s mature style of play, highlighting his ability to drop deep, initiate attacks, and finish them himself. However, Owen asserted that “measured against his career, he is better than the Bundesliga.”

According to Owen, Kane consistently plays in a dominant team that controls games and creates numerous chances, which he attributes to the overall low standard of the league. He described the Bundesliga as “very average” outside of Bayern Munich, suggesting that winning championships with the Bavarian giants is not a true benchmark of success, as “Bayern win these titles almost every time anyway.”

Premier League Success Would Have Been Greater

Owen argued that a greater achievement for Kane would have been to become the all-time leading scorer in Premier League history. He suggested that after his contract with Tottenham expired, Kane could have chosen any club, with Manchester United reportedly eager to sign him. Owen even speculated that Kane should have moved to Manchester United before Erling Haaland joined Manchester City.

Owen’s High Regard for Kane’s Mental Game

Despite his criticism of the transfer, Owen maintained his high regard for Kane’s abilities. “Some players have talents that simply cannot be learned: enormous speed, exceptional balance. But Harry’s greatest gift is not physical, but mental,” emphasized the 89-time capped England international. Owen believes that nothing in Kane’s game is accidental, stating, “He has shaped himself.”

Kane currently holds the record as England’s all-time leading goal scorer with 82 goals. He also surpassed Gary Lineker’s record of 10 World Cup goals, scoring his eleventh in England’s 2-0 victory over Panama in the last World Cup group stage match.
