Mobile Mast to Alleviate Bogenhausen’s “Third World” Mobile Dead Zone
Munich, June 29 – Residents of Munich’s Herzogpark and Tucherpark in Bogenhausen can expect improved mobile connectivity in the coming days, as a mobile phone mast is set to become operational. This development aims to finally resolve a long-standing mobile dead zone that has plagued the area since April 2025.
The initial problem arose when mobile antennas on a hotel roof in Tucherpark were dismantled due to renovation work. This left a significant portion of Bogenhausen without reliable mobile service, drawing strong criticism from residents and even prominent figures.
Telekom’s Solution: A Mobile Mast and Collaboration
A Telekom spokesperson confirmed that the new mobile mast will be strategically located closer to Bogenhausen, providing much-needed relief, particularly around Kufsteiner Platz. This is a second attempt to deploy a mobile mast in the Tucherpark area, as an earlier attempt had to be aborted due to ongoing construction work on the site.
In addition to the mobile mast, Telekom is also pursuing a collaboration with competitor Vodafone to utilize one of their existing sites. However, the activation of this shared site is experiencing delays, which Telekom states is beyond their control. “We have to wait until we get the green light,” said the spokesperson, emphasizing that once this site is operational, mobile coverage in Bogenhausen should return to normal levels.
A “Necessity, Not a Luxury” – Residents’ Frustration
The lack of mobile reception has been a significant source of frustration for residents. Journalist Sigmund Gottlieb, former editor-in-chief of BR, publicly expressed his dismay at the situation, describing the lack of connectivity in a major European city’s center as unacceptable.
A concerned citizen echoed these sentiments during a recent meeting of the Bogenhausen district committee, inquiring about the status of mobile coverage in the Herzogpark. “This is not a luxury, but a necessity; I feel like I’m in the third world,” the resident stated, highlighting the essential role mobile communication plays in modern life.
Long-Term Solutions and Community Involvement
Looking ahead, the hotel in Tucherpark is expected to reopen in 2027, at which point it is anticipated that mobile phone masts will once again be installed on its roof, offering a more permanent solution to the coverage issue.
Telekom is also actively seeking community involvement to expand its network. The company encourages property owners in Bogenhausen who are willing to provide their rooftops as locations for mobile masts to contact “Deutsche Funkturm” (www.dfmg.de). Telekom offers a locally customary, long-term rental fee for such locations, providing an incentive for residents to contribute to improving local infrastructure.
The deployment of the mobile mast is a crucial step towards restoring reliable mobile service in Bogenhausen, addressing the concerns of residents who have endured a prolonged period of connectivity issues. While the full resolution may take time, these immediate measures offer hope for a return to normal communication in the affected areas.
