NABU Demands End to Tugboat Ballet at Hamburg Port Anniversary
Hamburg, May 7, 2026 – The Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) has urged organizers of the Hamburg Port Anniversary to forgo the traditional tugboat ballet this year. Citing the ongoing global energy crisis, NABU believes it is inappropriate to continue with such a fuel-intensive spectacle. Malte Siegert, head of NABU Hamburg, stated on Thursday, one day before the start of the 837th Port Anniversary, that canceling the tugboat ballet would have been an important symbolic step.
The tugboat ballet, a long-standing tradition of the Port Anniversary, features four tugboats performing synchronized maneuvers to classical music in front of the Landungsbrücken. Each of these vessels consumes approximately 500 liters of diesel during the performance.
NABU Criticizes ‘Business as Usual’ Approach
Siegert expressed his dismay at the city’s approach: “Instead of sensitizing the population to savings, things are continuing as usual. Diesel and kerosene are becoming scarce, but a colorful backdrop with cruise ships and a tugboat ballet always works. You just shake your head at that.”
NABU also criticized the fireworks display at the Port Anniversary, arguing that it disturbs the breeding season of birds. According to Siegert, the Senate is once again missing an opportunity to transform the Port Anniversary into a showcase for environmentally friendly maritime innovations.
Economic Authority Defends Port Anniversary’s Sustainability
The Hamburg Economic Authority has rejected NABU’s demands. A spokesperson for the authority stated that it would be a shame to spoil the Hamburgers’ enjoyment of the Port Anniversary. Furthermore, the spokesperson emphasized that the port is presenting itself as more sustainable and modern than ever, showcasing research and hybrid ships.
