Munich, July 10 – Two severely emaciated ball pythons were discovered abandoned in a cardboard box in Munich. An unknown individual left the box with a note stating, “Please take me to the animal shelter.” This act of abandonment is not only irresponsible but also a criminal offense, according to veterinarian Thomas Türbl of the Munich Reptile Rescue Station, where the snakes are now being cared for.
Abandoned Pythons in Critical Condition
The ball pythons, found on Wednesday, were in a concerning state of health. Dr. Türbl emphasized the dangers of abandoning animals, stating, “There are enough places to hand over animals responsibly.” He highlighted that the snakes were significantly emaciated and vulnerable to respiratory illnesses due to recent temperature fluctuations. The identity of the person who found the snakes remains unknown, but police transported them to the reptile rescue station, a spokesperson for the organization confirmed.
The Dangers of Abandonment and Legal Consequences
Abandoning animals, especially exotic species like ball pythons, can have severe consequences for their well-being and is considered a criminal offense. Animals left in such conditions risk perishing if not found promptly. Dr. Türbl stressed the importance of responsible pet ownership and utilizing available resources for animal surrender rather than resorting to abandonment.
Ball Pythons: Gentle Giants Misunderstood
Ball pythons are generally known for their docile and shy nature. When threatened, they often curl into a tight ball, a behavior that earned them their English name. While they can bite in self-defense, their bites are typically harmless, comparable to a cat’s bite, and they frequently miss their target. This makes their abandonment even more tragic, as they are not inherently dangerous animals.
Ongoing Investigation and Animal Welfare Efforts
The police are investigating the incident to identify the individual responsible for abandoning the snakes. Meanwhile, the ball pythons are receiving specialized care at the Munich Reptile Rescue Station, where experts are working to restore their health. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities associated with pet ownership and the legal ramifications of animal cruelty.
