Hamburg Renaturates 34 Hectares of Lowland Moor in Neuland, Investing 1.5 Million Euros

Hamburg, July 13 – Hamburg’s environmental senator Katharina Fegebank (Greens) visited the lowland moor at Neuländer Baggersee on Monday. Approximately 1.5 million euros have been invested there in moor protection. The project is a so-called nature conservation compensation measure for areas that had to make way for the construction of the Mercedes plant in Moorburg 16 years ago.

34 Hectares of Lowland Moor Restored

According to the environmental authority, the lowland moor site in Neuland covers an area of 34 hectares. Intact moors are highly efficient carbon sinks, Fegebank emphasized. Only with the rewetting of the area can this function of the moor be maintained.

700-Meter Sheet Pile Wall Installed to Prevent Water Seepage

The moors in Neuland and Gut Moor at the foot of the Harburg Geestrand had been drained for agricultural use over centuries. Initial attempts in 2005 and 2006 to rewet the moors failed, as water seeped uncontrollably into the quarry lake. To prevent this seepage, a 700-meter-long and four-meter-deep plastic sheet pile wall has now been installed. An electric screw pump now feeds water into the areas in a controlled manner.

Return of Endangered Species: Lapwing, Redshank, and Moor Frog

According to the environmental authority, initial successes are already visible. Lapwings and redshanks are breeding there again, and the moor frog has also returned.

Environmental Associations Welcome Project, but Criticize Delays

The environmental and nature conservation associations BUND and NABU generally welcome the project. However, both believe that the renaturation comes much too late. “Compensation measures must not remain a paper promise,” said Gisela Bertram of BUND Hamburg. She added that they must also function permanently and be regularly checked, otherwise they would fail to serve their purpose.
