Hamburg, July 14 – The city of Hamburg is set to gain a new inner-city promenade, known as the ‘Domachse’, which will stretch from Jungfernstieg to the Speicherstadt. This ambitious project involves the redesign of existing streets and squares to enhance pedestrian connectivity and public spaces.
Years in the Making: A Vision for Pedestrian Connectivity
For several years, the Senate has sought to improve the pedestrian paths between the old city center and the modern HafenCity. The long-awaited master plan has finally been presented. Anjes Tjarks (Greens), Senator for Transport, stated on Tuesday: “We want a reorganization of the sidewalks, and this should be a proper promenade. We want to tidy up the peripheral areas, so that there is much more space for strolling and lingering.”
Hammaburg-Platz to Become a Green Oasis
A key element of the ‘Domachse’ project is the transformation of Hammaburg-Platz into a vibrant meeting point in the heart of Hamburg. The bus stop at St. Peter’s Church will be relocated, and the freed-up space will be integrated into Hammaburg-Platz. This area will be developed into a park adorned with trees. Franz-Josef Höing, Director of Urban Planning, explained: “This is not just a small green remnant, but a significantly large new green urban space that can also accommodate children’s play facilities.”
Karen Pein: “A New Meeting Point in the City Center”
Karen Pein (SPD), Senator for Urban Development, emphasized the significance of this transformation: “The absolute highlight will certainly be the Hammaburg-Platz, enlarged by up to 40 percent. Hamburg’s historical birthplace will become a new meeting point in the city center.”
Road Changes to Benefit Pedestrians and Cyclists
The Alter Fischmarkt street will see two of its lanes removed to make way for wider pedestrian and cycling paths. However, the largest obstacle between the old and new city, the major Willy-Brandt-Straße, will remain unchanged.
“Innenstadt” Master Plan Presented
Despite some skepticism, the city center continues to enjoy great popularity, as noted by Senator Pein during the presentation of the “Zukunftsbild Innenstadt” (Future Vision for the Inner City) master plan. This initiative underscores Hamburg’s commitment to enhancing its urban core for both residents and visitors.
