Munich Kicks Off First Disability Pride Month with City Hall Flag Raising
Munich, July 17, 2026 – Munich officially inaugurated its first Disability Pride Month (July 16-26) today with a symbolic flag-raising ceremony at City Hall. Mayor Verena Dietl, Disability Commissioner Daniela Maier, Nadja Rackwitz, Chairwoman of the Disability Advisory Board, and Cornelia von Pappenheim, Deputy Chairwoman, jointly hoisted four Disability Pride flags at the Fischbrunnen. This action marked a clear commitment to fostering an inclusive urban society.
Mayor Verena Dietl emphasized the significance of the event: “The flags at City Hall are an unmistakable promise. All people should be able to participate, shape, and decide. It’s about much more than ramps and sign language. A disability can exist from birth. Most often, it develops later in life, for example, through illness, an accident, or old age. For me, inclusion determines whether our city serves everyone. We are consistently fulfilling this mission. An inclusive Munich is a more livable Munich for all of us.”
Promoting Diversity and Self-Determination
Disability Commissioner Daniela Maier highlighted the purpose of the month-long initiative: “We are organizing ‘Disability Pride Month’ in Munich to showcase the diversity of our community and to draw attention to the living situation of Munich residents with disabilities. Especially nowadays, it is important that we strengthen social cohesion and that the self-determination of people with disabilities is not seen as a cost factor.”
Nadja Rackwitz, Chairwoman of the Disability Advisory Board, underscored the historical context and ongoing efforts: “The Disability Advisory Board has been advocating for inclusion and accessibility in Munich for over 50 years. The fact that the city is officially showing its colors is an important step. A city where everyone can participate as a matter of course also needs all of us – the city administration, politicians, and all citizens who live here.”
Cornelia von Pappenheim, Deputy Chairwoman of the Disability Advisory Board, added: “The ‘Disability Pride Month’ makes our concerns visible! It stands for a Munich that respects people with visible and invisible disabilities, as well as those with mental illnesses and addictions.”
