Hamburg, July 21 – The Hamburg Parliament has conducted its first-ever survey among its members regarding their migration background. The results, released today, indicate that nearly a third of the parliamentarians, specifically 28 percent, have a migration background. This figure is based on the participation of 102 out of 121 members in the voluntary survey.

Detailed Survey Results

Out of the 102 participating members of the Hamburg Parliament, 29 individuals reported having a migration background, while 73 stated they did not. This places the proportion of members with a migration background at approximately 28 percent. In comparison, according to the North Statistical Office, 42 percent of all residents in Hamburg have a migration background. However, it is important to note that the population statistics include individuals without German citizenship, whereas only German citizens over 18 years of age are eligible to be elected to the Parliament.

Diverse Origins of Parliamentarians

The family connections of Hamburg’s politicians span a wide range of countries, including Turkey, Poland, Brazil, Iran, Afghanistan, and Ghana. This diversity reflects the multicultural fabric of Hamburg itself and highlights the increasing representation of various communities within the city’s political landscape.

Context and Significance

This survey marks a significant step towards understanding the demographic composition of Hamburg’s legislative body. The data provides valuable insights into the representation of different population groups within the political sphere. While the percentage of parliamentarians with a migration background (28%) is lower than the overall population figure for Hamburg (42%), the survey specifically targets elected officials who must hold German citizenship, which partially explains the difference. The initiative to collect this data underscores a growing awareness and interest in diversity and representation within political institutions.

Impact on Policy and Governance

The presence of a significant number of parliamentarians with diverse backgrounds can potentially enrich political discourse and ensure that a broader range of perspectives and experiences are considered in policy-making. This can lead to more inclusive governance that better reflects the needs and concerns of all residents of Hamburg.

Future Implications

The results of this inaugural survey may prompt further discussions on political participation and representation within Hamburg. It could also encourage other German states or cities to conduct similar surveys to gain a clearer picture of the diversity within their own legislative bodies. Such data is crucial for assessing progress towards equitable representation and identifying areas where further efforts might be needed to promote inclusive political structures.

This initiative by the Hamburg Parliament provides a foundational understanding of the migration background of its members, setting a precedent for future analyses and discussions on diversity in politics.
