Munich, Bavaria – Commuters relying on Munich’s S-Bahn line S5 are facing a challenging period as extensive bridge construction work will lead to disruptions for almost three months. The project, located in Großhelfendorf, will necessitate rail replacement services, impacting thousands of daily travelers.

S5 Line: Three Months of Construction and Rail Replacement

Deutsche Bahn announced that bridge construction work in Großhelfendorf will commence on July 24th at 8:50 PM and is expected to conclude on October 16th at 4:30 AM. This nearly three-month period will see the S5 line interrupted, posing a significant test for many who commute daily into Munich from the southern surrounding areas.

As a result, a rail replacement service with buses will be established between the Aying and Kreuzstraße stations. This service will also cover the intermediate stops of Peiß and Großhelfendorf, which will be accessible by bus instead of train during this time.

Extended Rail Replacement Services During Peak Construction

In certain periods, the construction work will be expanded, leading to extended rail replacement services. The planned schedule for these expanded services is as follows:

  • Nights of Monday/Tuesday, July 27th/28th, to Friday/Saturday, July 31st/August 1st: Bus replacement service between Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn and Kreuzstraße.
  • Nights of Saturday/Sunday, August 1st/2nd, to Thursday/Friday, August 6th/7th: Bus replacement service between Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn and Kreuzstraße.
  • Nights of Tuesday/Wednesday, August 25th/26th, to Friday/Saturday, August 28th/29th: Bus replacement service between Perlach and Kreuzstraße.
  • Night of Monday, August 31st: Bus replacement service between Hohenbrunn and Kreuzstraße.
  • Nights of Tuesday/Wednesday, September 1st/2nd, to Wednesday/Thursday, September 2nd/3rd (each from 9 PM to 4 AM): Bus replacement service between Hohenbrunn and Kreuzstraße.
  • Night of Thursday/Friday, September 3rd/4th (9 PM to 4 AM): Bus replacement service between Ostbahnhof and Kreuzstraße.
  • Nights of Monday/Tuesday, September 7th/8th, to Thursday/Friday, September 10th/11th, and Monday/Tuesday, September 14th/15th, to Thursday/Friday, September 17th/18th (each from 9 PM to 4 AM): Bus replacement service between Ostbahnhof and Hohenbrunn.

Commuters are advised to consult the Deutsche Bahn’s construction website for detailed timetables, which will be updated for the upcoming months.

The construction work is expected to significantly impact daily travel for a large number of commuters. Deutsche Bahn urges passengers to plan their journeys accordingly and allow for additional travel time.
