In a letter addressed to Joachim Herrmann, the Bavarian State Minister of the Interior, for Sport and Integration, Allgäu GmbH has declared its readiness to actively contribute to the Olympic concept by hosting individual competitions.
Allgäu: A Natural Fit for Olympic Events
Christian Wilhelm, District Administrator and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Allgäu GmbH, highlighted the region’s suitability. “As one of Germany’s most renowned sports, tourism, and lifestyle regions, Allgäu wishes to express its fundamental willingness to actively participate in a corresponding concept and to host individual competitions as a co-hosting region,” Wilhelm stated. He emphasized Allgäu’s strong association with sport, outdoor activities, nature experiences, and hospitality. The region’s extensive experience in hosting international top-tier sporting events, excellent infrastructure, and a highly enthusiastic local population for major sporting events provide a solid foundation.
Furthermore, Allgäu boasts a globally recognized landscape, including Oberstdorf and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Neuschwanstein Castle. This picturesque setting could significantly enhance the international appeal of Olympic Games in Bavaria.
Proven Competence in Sports and Organization
Allgäu’s track record speaks for itself. The region has successfully hosted numerous major sporting events, such as the Nordic Ski World Championships, the long-standing Allgäu Triathlon, and high-profile cycling events. Coupled with the Olympic training center in Oberstdorf, these demonstrate the region’s high level of sporting and organizational expertise. Allgäu’s natural environment has served for years as a tried and tested venue for international competitions.
Potential for Cycling and Triathlon
Wilhelm specifically identified road cycling as a particularly suitable event for Allgäu. A challenging route from the Allgäu Alps to Munich has been proposed. Such a course could involve all Allgäu municipalities and connect world-famous landmarks, starting from the Alpine backdrop with Nebelhorn and the internationally renowned winter sports resort of Oberstdorf. It would then pass through cultural and spa towns like the Basilica of Ottobeuren and the Kneipp town of Bad Wörishofen, continuing through historical cities to Füssen with Neuschwanstein Castle and Lake Forggensee, before ultimately leading through the picturesque pre-Alpine landscape to Munich.
Beyond road cycling, Allgäu offers ideal conditions for other cycling disciplines, including mountain bike cross-country and BMX competitions, with the southern Oberallgäu providing excellent facilities. The region is also perfectly suited for triathlon events. The established Allgäu Triathlon has consistently set standards for organization, quality, and atmosphere in professional sports for many years.

Stefan Egenter, Managing Director of Allgäu GmbH, emphasized the broader benefits. “Olympic Games in Bavaria offer the chance to showcase the diversity of our Free State. Allgäu wants to make a dedicated contribution and participate as a capable, experienced, and enthusiastic partner,” he stated. He added that a decentralized hosting approach aligns with modern concepts of sustainable Olympic Games. Allgäu GmbH aims to be involved early in further planning and discussions to collaboratively develop concrete concepts for routes, infrastructure, and organization.
