Environmental Administration: Please Enjoy Forests Responsibly
Berlin, July 29 – In light of high temperatures and prevailing dry conditions, Berlin’s Environmental Administration is reminding the public about the year-round smoking ban in the city’s forests. This measure comes as the risk of wildfires remains elevated, according to a press release from the Senate Department for the Environment and Climate Action.
Sensitive Ecosystems Deserve Protection
Environment Senator Ute Bonde (CDU) emphasized the dual role of Berlin’s forests. “Our forests are not only important recreational areas and habitats for people and nature, but also particularly sensitive ecosystems that deserve protection,” said Bonde. She added that those seeking recreation can contribute to their preservation by behaving respectfully and responsibly.
Immediate Reporting of Fires and Strict Regulations
The Berlin Forestry Department reiterates that barbecues and smoking are strictly prohibited in Berlin’s forests throughout the year. Visitors are also asked to immediately report any smoke or fires by calling the emergency number 112. To ensure safety and accessibility, the department advises parking vehicles only in designated parking lots and keeping emergency access routes and forest entrances clear. Furthermore, visitors should remain on designated trails, keep dogs on a leash, and refrain from leaving any trash behind.
Wildfire Danger Remains Moderate
For Thursday, the German Weather Service has classified the wildfire risk for Berlin as “moderate” (level 3 out of 5) at all monitoring stations. It is widely acknowledged that wildfires are almost exclusively caused by human activity. The Berlin Forestry Department also notes that temperatures within forests are typically three to five degrees cooler than outside, and the tree canopy helps reduce evaporation. These factors make forest playgrounds and forest lakes popular destinations on hot days.
