Berlin, August 1 – A 70-year-old man from Berlin has been charged with allegedly attempting to transport over two tons of cocaine across the Atlantic to Europe. The man, who is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence for a 2024 drug trafficking offence, is now accused of coordinating and pre-financing the transport of more than 2.2 tons of cocaine from Brazil to Europe in 2021.
Details of the Allegations
The public prosecutor’s office announced on Thursday that it had filed charges before the Berlin regional court against the man. He is alleged to have spent 2 million euros to coordinate and pre-finance the substantial drug shipment. If convicted, he could face an additional 10 years to his current sentence.
According to the charges, the man allegedly used an encrypted phone from the provider Sky ECC to plan the transport of the cocaine. The scheme involved moving the drugs from Brazil to Sierra Leone via a catamaran. From Sierra Leone, the cocaine was then intended to be smuggled into Europe.
The Failed Smuggling Attempt
The elaborate plan ultimately broke down due to a critical communication error. The catamaran was reportedly unable to establish contact with a tugboat in Sierra Leone as planned, forcing it to turn around. On its return journey to Brazil, the catamaran was intercepted by Brazilian authorities, and all its crew members were arrested.
Following their arrest, the crew members were sentenced to several years in prison. The captain of the catamaran received a particularly lengthy sentence of 23 years and 4 months. The confiscated 2.2 tons of cocaine were subsequently destroyed, and the sailboat involved in the smuggling attempt was handed over to a Brazilian university for marine research purposes.
Broader Context of Drug Trafficking
This case highlights the sophisticated methods employed in international drug trafficking, often involving significant financial investment and complex logistical arrangements. The use of encrypted communication and unconventional transport methods, such as catamarans, underscores the lengths to which criminal organizations go to avoid detection.
The charges against the 70-year-old Berlin man serve as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat drug smuggling operations that span continents. The severity of the potential additional sentence reflects the gravity with which authorities view the coordination and financing of such large-scale illicit activities.
The incident also sheds light on the global nature of the drug trade, with routes often extending from South America, through Africa, and into European markets. The successful interception by Brazilian authorities in this case prevented a significant quantity of illegal narcotics from reaching its intended destination.
The Berlin regional court will now oversee the proceedings against the accused, who faces severe penalties for his alleged role in this major international drug smuggling operation. The outcome of the trial will further underscore the legal consequences for those involved in such illicit ventures.
