Hamburg CSD to Proceed with Increased Security Following Berlin Attack
Hamburg, August 1st – The Hamburg Christopher Street Day (CSD) is scheduled to commence today, August 1st, 2026, against the backdrop of a recent attack on the Berlin CSD. This year’s event will see a record 150 participating groups, while also featuring a noticeable reduction in the number of trucks and a significant increase in security personnel.
Following the attack on the Berlin CSD on July 27th, the Hamburg Pride association has called upon the entire community to join the march today. Hamburg Pride stated on Wednesday that the Berlin attack “shockingly demonstrates how far we are from a future in which queer people can live safely as a matter of course.” They emphasized the paramount importance of the Hamburg CSD proceeding, “as a sign of community, solidarity, and with the message: Queer people are an integral part of this society and do not stand alone.”
“Now more than ever, we must stand together and remain visible”
“Now more than ever, we must stand together and remain visible,” declared Jenny Saitzek and Christoph Kahrmann, co-chairs of Hamburg Pride. “We are taking to the streets – for diversity, freedom, and equality. We will not be intimidated, displaced, or silenced.”
Lukas Weisselberg, in a commentary titled “We need a Christopher Street Day,” underscored the importance of the CSD and the solidarity of the queer community, especially in light of the Berlin attack casting a shadow over the Hamburg event.
Continuous Exchange with the Police
Hamburg Pride asserted that condolences from the federal government are insufficient. They stressed that it is high time to expand Article 3 of the Basic Law and consistently strengthen protection against discrimination. “Our answer to hatred is visibility, solidarity, and the demand for a policy that finally effectively strengthens our protection,” the co-chairs added.
Hamburg Pride confirmed continuous communication with the police, stating that Hamburg’s security authorities currently have no concrete threat intelligence for the CSD. Nevertheless, the number of deployed officers has been increased. “The security authorities are doing everything to protect the CSD and the demonstration on Saturday,” Hamburg Pride affirmed.
Record Participation and Prominent Figures Expected
This year marks a record with 150 participating groups. Among those expected to attend the demonstration are Labor Minister Bärbel Bas (SPD), the Federal Government Commissioner for the Acceptance of Sexual and Gender Diversity Sophie Koch, Hamburg’s Second Mayor Katharina Fegebank (Greens), Parliament President Carola Veit (SPD), Finance Senator Andreas Dressel (SPD), and drag queen Olivia Jones.
Notably, the organizers of the Berlin CSD will also be participating with their own float. “Now more than ever, we must not be intimidated,” the Berlin board announced on Thursday. “Our answer to hatred is solidarity. Our answer to fear is visibility.” Their short-notice participation in Hamburg also signals their continued commitment. “There will be a CSD in Berlin again. And this weekend, we are supporting Hamburg Pride,” the association stated.
Fewer Trucks, Growing Interest in CSD
Manuel Opitz of the Hamburg Pride association indicated that there will be significantly fewer trucks at the CSD demonstration this year compared to the previous year. He primarily attributes this to the economic crisis, as large floats are often sponsored by companies. “Many companies are no longer bringing a truck to the route, but have registered a walking group instead. So they are not necessarily disappearing, but reorienting themselves.”
Opitz noted that despite nationwide discussions in recent months about companies no longer participating in CSD due to a perceived shift in political sentiment, this trend is not evident in Hamburg. He emphasized that interest in Christopher Street Day continues to grow in Hamburg. However, he also warned of an increase in attacks on queer individuals.
CSD Route and Pride Week Activities
The Hamburg CSD this year is themed: “Solidary Queer. Show Your Stance – For a Future Without Fear!” Organizers anticipate hundreds of thousands of people for the CSD demonstration. The parade will begin at 12:00 PM on Lübecker Straße, as it did last year. This year’s route will again pass through Steindamm. The streets for the demonstration parade include: Lübecker Straße, Steindamm, Kreuzweg, Adenauer Allee, Steintorwall, Steinstraße, Bergstraße, Mönckebergstraße, Steintorwall, Glockengießerwall up to Lombardsbrücke.
The Pride Week leading up to Christopher Street Day in Hamburg is taking place from July 25th to August 2nd this year. The traditional CSD street festival will be held from July 31st to August 2nd around the Binnenalster and at the City Hall.
The highlight of Pride Week is the Christopher Street Day demonstration, scheduled for August 1st, with hundreds of thousands of attendees expected.
Enhanced Police Presence for Security
According to police, there are currently no indications of a concrete threat of attack for the Hamburg CSD; nevertheless, the police are planning with more operational forces.
The Stonewall Demo – the precursor to Christopher Street Day – first took place in Hamburg in 1980. This year’s CSD is on August 1st.
