‘Scenic Eclipse II’ Makes Maiden Call to Hamburg Port
Hamburg, August 3 – The ‘Scenic Eclipse II’, a luxury expedition ship, arrived in Hamburg for the first time on Monday evening, mooring at the Cruise Center in Hafencity. The vessel is scheduled to depart on Tuesday evening.
Described by the Australian shipping company Scenic as a ‘Discovery Yacht’, the ship combines luxury cruises with expedition voyages to remote areas. On board, there is an expedition team consisting of naturalists, geologists, and marine biologists. For excursions, two helicopters and a specially designed submarine are also available on board.
Luxury and Expedition Capabilities
The ‘Scenic Eclipse II’ is nearly 170 meters long, 22 meters wide, and features a dark blue hull. Across eight decks, there are a total of 114 suites, each offering personal butler service. A two-and-a-half-week luxury cruise in the 110-square-meter Panorama Suite costs over 34,000 Euros. Currently, the ship is on a 13-day voyage from London to Stockholm.
The ship is also designed for travel through ice-covered waters. In January 2026, the ‘Scenic Eclipse II’ encountered dense pack ice during a voyage in the Ross Sea (Antarctica). Equipped with an ice class rating, it can carry up to 200 guests to the Arctic and Antarctic. However, earlier this year, the ship was temporarily stuck in the Antarctic pack ice. It was freed by the US icebreaker ‘Polar Star’, which carved a channel for the cruise ship.
Departure from Hamburg
The ‘Scenic Eclipse II’ will stay in Hamburg for one day, departing on Tuesday around 6 PM. Its departure will be marked by water fountains from the Hamburg fire department.
The cruise industry in Hamburg is growing approximately twice as fast as the overall economy, according to a recent study, highlighting its importance as an economic factor for the city.
