Kneipe 80 and Oschi Pastrami Join Forces to Introduce New York Deli Culture to Munich

Munich, August 6 – Kneipe 80, a bar concept inspired by the 1980s, has announced a gastronomic partnership with the start-up Oschi Pastrami. This collaboration aims to bring authentic New York deli culture, specifically handcrafted pastrami sandwiches, to Munich. The initiative will kick off with a pop-up event at the Viktualienmarkt, followed by Oschi Pastrami becoming a permanent fixture in both Kneipe 80 locations in the city.

Pop-Up at Viktualienmarkt Precedes Permanent Integration

The partnership will first manifest as a six-day pop-up at Fruitique’s stand on the Viktualienmarkt. This temporary installation, running from August 20-22 and August 27-29, from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM each day, will allow Munich residents to experience Oschi’s pastrami sandwiches. Following this trial period, Oschi will take over the food offerings at Kneipe 80’s two Munich branches permanently.

Marc Uebelherr of Kneipe 80 expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “I had been looking for a food idea that truly fits our concept for a long time. When Andi and Carlos approached us with their pastrami, it was immediately clear: This is it. This product has quality, character, and perfectly matches the vibe of Kneipe 80.”

The Genesis of Oschi Pastrami: A New York Inspiration

Oschi was founded by Carlos Bade and Andi Kaufmann. The inspiration for the venture struck Bade after tasting a pastrami sandwich at Katz’s Delicatessen in New York. “At that moment, I understood what pastrami could be: Juicy. Smoky. Spicy. Honest. It was immediately clear to me: There is practically nothing of this quality in Germany. That’s exactly what I wanted to change,” Bade explained.

Bade and Kaufmann dedicated a year and a half to developing their recipe, aiming for a product that prioritizes quality and simplicity. Their goal was to create an authentic pastrami sandwich that is handcrafted, regionally produced, and free from unnecessary frills. The name “Oschi” itself refers to the generous size of the richly filled sandwiches, traditionally served with pickled gherkins. The process involves seasoning, curing, and cooking beef brisket.

Seamless Integration into Kneipe 80’s Concept

A significant advantage of the Oschi concept, according to the partners, is its ability to integrate into existing operations without requiring a traditional restaurant kitchen. This makes it an ideal fit for Kneipe 80’s bar environment.

The collaboration seeks to re-establish the pastrami classic in Munich, offering an authentic, high-quality product with the cult factor of the 80s. The long-term vision includes opening a dedicated Oschi Pastrami storefront.

This partnership highlights a growing trend of established businesses collaborating with innovative start-ups to diversify their offerings and cater to evolving consumer tastes. The combination of Kneipe 80’s retro charm and Oschi’s dedication to authentic deli cuisine is set to create a unique culinary experience in Munich.
