Munich Rail Line Closure: What Passengers Need to Know Now
Due to ongoing construction work for the 2nd main line at Laimer Bahnhof, S-Bahn tracks will be closed for several days in August, leading to significant changes in S-Bahn services. These closures will affect daily commutes and regional travel for Munich residents and visitors.
Key Dates and Closures:
- Night of August 17 to 18: The entire main S-Bahn line will be closed.
- Tuesday, August 18 (3:30 AM) to Tuesday, August 25 (5:00 AM): Only the S-Bahn tracks in the Laim area will be closed.
- From August 25 until mid-2028: S-Bahn trains traveling city-bound from Pasing on lines S3, S4, S6, and S8 will no longer stop at Laim and will pass through to Hirschgarten. Trains in the opposite direction (from Laim to Pasing) will operate as usual.
During the period from August 18 to August 25, the stations Laim and Hirschgarten will only be accessible via replacement buses operating between Pasing and Hackerbrücke.
S-Bahn Line Changes (August 17-25):
- S1: Operates only between Freising/Airport and Moosach. Passengers can transfer to the U3 at Moosach and U2 at Feldmoching.
- S2: Operates only between Altomünster/Petershausen and Heimeranplatz (U5) every half hour, and between Hackerbrücke and Erding at regular intervals. A shuttle service runs between Altomünster and Dachau at regular intervals.
- S3: Operates only between Mammendorf and Pasing, and between Donnersbergerbrücke and Holzkirchen.
- S4: Operates only between Geltendorf and Pasing.
- S5/S7: These lines are combined and run continuously between Icking and Aying (simultaneous construction work in Icking and Großhelfendorf).
- S6: Operates only between Tutzing and Hauptbahnhof (without intermediate stops from/to Pasing) and between Ostbahnhof and Ebersberg.
- S8: Operates only between Herrsching and Hauptbahnhof (without intermediate stops from/to Pasing) and between Donnersbergerbrücke and the Airport.
Regional Rail Service Disruptions:
The track closures also impact regional services:
- Regional trains from and to Augsburg (Arverio) will operate as usual.
- Regional trains from Werdenfels (DB Regio) will only run to Pasing.
- Allgäu regional trains RE 70 (DB Regio) and RE 96 (Arverio) from Lindau, and RE 72 (Arverio) from Memmingen will pass through Pasing in both directions without stopping.
- Line RB 74 from Buchloe (DB Regio) and, on weekends, line RB 68 from Füssen (BRB) will only run to Fürstenfeldbruck or Pasing and turn around there. Passengers can transfer to the S-Bahn.
- Regional trains from Landshut are also affected: Line RE 2 will only run to Moosach (passengers can use the U3 as an alternative).
- Most RE 3 trains will be diverted from Munich Moosach and will start and end at Holzkirchner Flügelbahnhof. Due to longer travel times, trains will arrive later in Munich and depart approximately 15 minutes earlier than the normal schedule.
Impact on Laimer Bahnhof until Mid-2028:
Once the second track of the new platform at Laim is operational, the demolition and reconstruction of the old platform will begin. This means that from August 25 until approximately mid-2028, city-bound S-Bahn trains on lines S3, S4, S6, and S8 coming from Pasing will no longer stop at Laim. They will instead proceed directly to Hirschgarten. Trains heading from Laim to Pasing will not be affected and will stop regularly.
Passengers are advised to check current schedules and plan their journeys accordingly to minimize disruptions.
